Maryville lawyer Jama Lynn McMurray died on Jan. 5. She was 49. McMurray, first licensed in 2000, served Blount and Sevier counties for many years. Services were held on Jan. 9.

The Supreme Court of Tennessee on Thursday temporarily suspended Carla L. Arevalo from the practice of law for failing to respond to the Board regarding a complaint of misconduct. Section 12.3 of Supreme Court Rule 9 provides for the immediate summary suspension of an attorney’s license to practice law in cases of an attorney’s failure to respond to the Board regarding a complaint of misconduct. Arevalo is immediately precluded from accepting any new clients or cases and must cease representing all existing clients by February 10, 2018.

The law license of Francis Duncan Gibson III was transferred to disability inactive status on Thursday, pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Gibson cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

Claria Horn Boom, a Vanderbilt Law graduate and a partner at Frost Brown Todd in Lexington, Kentucky, has been nominated to a shared seat on the U.S. Districts of Eastern and Western Kentucky. The seat has been open since 2013, when Judge Jennifer Coffman retired.

Assistant United States Attorney Gary S. Humble announced Thursday that he has filed a qualifying petition for the post of Signal Mountain Town Judge with the Hamilton County Election Commission, Chattanoogan.com reports. The non-partisan election is set for Aug. 2. Humble was a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chattanooga from 1987 to 2011. Mark Rothberger was Signal Mountain judge from 1996 until his retirement last year. Tracy Cox had been appointed interim judge.

Clark Boyd, a Lebanon man who unsuccessfully challenged former Sen. Mae Beavers in a Republican primary in 2014, has been chosen by the Wilson County Commission to replace Mark Pody as the District 46 representative in the House, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Pody won the District 17 Senate seat in a special election last month.

Secret recordings of former Pilot Flying J President Mark Hazelwood featured derogatory comments, including racial epithets, Knoxnews reported from trial testimony yesterday. Hazelwood was recorded secretly at a meeting for company executives in 2012. On the recordings played for jurors, he was heard requesting an explicitly racist song, and singing along to the words with his colleagues. Hazelwood and other executives are on trial for wire fraud and conspiracy charges in connection with a scheme to rip off smaller trucking companies.

Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris said yesterday that he questioned his chances to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a new U.S. District Court Judge for Western Tennessee, The Tennessean reports. He said he would continue in his position in the legislature until he is confirmed. "I don’t trust the United States Senate to follow through on this," he said during a state Senate GOP caucus meeting. "I’m not going to resign the seat which my constituents have elected me or this leadership for which you elected me."

A special prosecutor has dismissed all 12 felony charges against Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson, the Times Free Press reports. Watson was charged in July 2017 for having or using forged vehicle titles in his side business as a used car salesman. Watson was due to stand trial on Jan. 22. Jimmy Dunn, 4th Judicial District Attorney General, said that Watson’s attorney filed copies of documents showing Watson paid taxes and fees on the vehicles in question.

Online legal referral and attorney rating service Avvo has been purchased by Internet Brands, the ABA Journal reports. Internet Brands already owns Nolo.com and Total Attorneys, which are lead generators for attorneys. While the details of the deal have not been released, Avvo was valued in 2015 at $650 million. The company was founded in 2006 and employs about 350 people.
