President Donald Trump has nominated Tennessee’s Chief Deputy Attorney General Paul Ney Jr. to serve as General Counsel at the Department of Defense, according to a statement on the White House’s website. Ney has been a partner in Patterson Intellectual Property Law PC in Nashville. He previously served as Acting General Counsel of the Department of the Navy, as Principal Deputy General Counsel of the Department of the Navy, and as Deputy General Counsel for Legal Counsel in the Department of Defense.

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands announced that Scott Hickman will serve as the 2018 chair of the Campaign for Equal Justice, an annual initiative that raises funds for Legal Aid Society. Hickman, an attorney at Sherrard Roe Voigt & Harbison practicing in the areas of employment law and business dispute resolution, has been an active participant in Legal Aid’s free legal help clinics since 2000. The Campaign for Equal Justice, set to launch in March, has been held annually since 1987. This year’s goal has yet to be set, but in 2017, the campaign received $814,240 of a $826,000 goal.

Three lawyers have been named the Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, and Gail Ashworth has been appointed the new chair. Michael L. Forrester of Kingsport, John L. Farringer of Nashville, and Alexander McVeagh of Chattanooga were appointed to three-year terms to replace the outgoing Marcia M. Eason, David R. Esquivel and Anthony Alan Seaton. Ashworth’s term as chair will last two years, beginning on April 1. Farringer also currently serves as chair of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Access to Justice committee.

Two Franklin lawyers were indicted for drug distribution following a police investigation, WKRN reports. Georgia Felner and Sandra Wels were arrested today, and are accused of selling drugs to undercover Franklin police detectives. Both lawyers had previously worked in the District Attorney’s office. Felner is charged with sale of a Schedule VI controlled substance and delivery of a Schedule VI controlled substance. Wells is charged with sale of a scheduled VI controlled substance and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver.

Nashville lawyer Joseph O. Martin Jr. died on Jan. 2. He was 89. A native of Davidson County, he graduated from Vanderbilt Law, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He joined the Tennessee Air National Guard in 1948. After law school, he joined the firm of Martin & Cochran, which later became Gullett, Sanford, Robinson & Martin. He taught for 27 years at the Nashville School of Law and for over 40 years he operated the scoreboard for Vanderbilt football games.

The Tennessee Supreme Court reinstated a jury verdict finding a Knox County defendant, LaJuan Harbison, guilty of three counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and three counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. In a unanimous opinion authored by Justice Sharon G. Lee, the court reversed the decision of the Court of Criminal Appeals, which had reversed Harbison's convictions for insufficient evidence.

Lawyers for Cyntoia Brown, the Nashville woman serving a life sentence for killing a man who picked her up when she was 16, has filed an appeal in federal court challenging her sentence, The Tennessean reports. The appeal requests the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to weigh the constitutionality of her life sentence and to consider if Brown is actually innocent because she lacked the sufficient mental capacity for a murder conviction at the time of the crime. Brown is 29 now, and her cause has been championed by celebrities and activists.

A federal appeals court has upheld the 2014 vote in favor of Amendment 1, which added language to the Tennessee constitution allowing the legislature to enact stricter abortion regulations, The Tennessean reports. Eight voters had challenged the vote, claiming the way the state counted the ballots was unconstitutional and sought a recount.

The U.S. Senate today voted to unanimously confirm Nashville attorney William “Chip” Campbell Jr. to become a U.S. District Court judge for the Middle District of Tennessee, The Commercial Appeal reports. President Donald Trump nominated Campbell for the position in July. He will replace Chief U.S. District Judge Kevin H. Sharp, who resigned in January.
