State House District 24 Rep. Kevin Brooks announced he will not seek reelection for his seat, opting instead to run for mayor of Cleveland, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Current Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland said he would not run again and endorsed Brooks’ candidacy. House District 24 includes parts of Bradley County.

Three attorneys were among the Greater Knoxville Business Journal’s annual 40 Under 40 list. Crista Cuccaro, a staff attorney at the City of Knoxville, Valeria Gomez, an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow with Volunteer Immigrant Defense Advocates, and Rachel Lokitz, associate general counsel and corporate secretary for ORAU all were honored this year.

The Tennessee Court of Appeals denied a petition to reverse a Williamson County judge's dismissal of a high-profile sexual assault lawsuit, instead instructing a mother and son suing Brentwood Academy to appeal the lower court's decision, The Tennessean reports. The original petition last month asked for a writ of mandamus, an order from a higher court instructing a lower court to carry out an action. It came a week after Williamson County Circuit Judge Deanna Johnson dismissed a lawsuit filed against Brentwood Academy with prejudice, meaning it couldn't be refiled in the future.

Lewis Donelson III, senior counsel and co-founder of Baker Donelson, died today. He had recently celebrated his 100th birthday. A native of Memphis, Donelson graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1941, and founded his firm Donelson & Adams in 1954. He formed the first professional limited liability company in Tennessee and established some of the earliest private pension and profit-sharing plans. He was involved in numerous philanthropic efforts and was politically active as well, including service as one of Memphis’s first councilmen, starting in 1967, and Commissioner of Finance and Administration under Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander. In 1994, Sen. Howard Baker’s firm, Baker Worthington, merged with Donelson’s firm to form Baker Donelson. The TBA will post updates when details of services are available.

Tennessee Solicitor General Andrée Blumstein recently served as a guest blogger for the Supreme Court of the United States Blog (SCOTUSblog). The post she wrote, "Symposium: Hijacked riders, not free riders," deals with Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Council 31. The court will consider whether an Illinois law allowing public sector unions to charge nonmembers for collective-bargaining activities violates the First Amendment. The Obama-era policy that paved the way for legalized pot will be coming to an end, Politico reports. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to rescind the policy and instead let federal prosecutors decide how aggressively to enforce federal marijuana law. The report comes just days after recreational marijuana shops opened in California. Sessions in the past has compared marijuana to heroin and blamed it for violence.

Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III and the Federal Trade Commission are reminding consumers to file claims related to a $586 million settlement between Western Union Company, the FTC, and the U.S. Department of Justice before the approaching deadline. Consumers who lost money to scammers who told them to pay via Western Union’s money transfer system between Jan. 1, 2004, and Jan. 19, 2017, must file a claim to get their money back before Feb. 12.

The Nashville office of Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP has hired a whole team of retail and hospitality attorneys from another prominent firm, the Nashville Business Journal reports. William Cheek, Robert Pinson, Olatayo Atanda and Kimberly Faye all departed Bone McAllester Norton PLLC for Waller. Cheek is known for his work in alcoholic beverage law, and is a founding member of the Alliance of Alcohol Industry Attorneys and Consultants.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is adding two assistant U.S. attorney positions for the Middle District of Tennessee, the Nashville Post reports. The additional prosecutors are among 40 new positions across the country who will focus on violent crime. “I will be meeting with local law enforcement leaders and district attorneys general to formulate a strategy aimed at vigorously pursuing those violent offenders whose criminal behavior disrupts the peace and harmony of our neighborhoods and endangers the lives of innocent citizens,” U.S. Attorney for the Middle District Don Cochran said.
