After the Federal Communications Commission voted to kill net neutrality rules today, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that he is suing to block the change, The Hill reports. Schneiderman said the new rules would enable internet service providers (ISP) to charge customers more for access to commonly used sites like Facebook and Twitter. He also claims that ISPs would be able to favor certain viewpoints over others. Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson also announced that he would file suit over the new policy.

Special Judge Mike Pemberton of Roane County heard arguments yesterday in a case that seeks to stop Bradley County from issuing marriage licenses and have the state’s marriage license law declared invalid, the Times Free Press reports. The lawsuit, filed by a pastor and county commissioner, claims that the June 2015 Obergefell decision invalidates Tennessee law that says state marriage licenses can only be issued to a man and a woman. A tentative trial date for the case has been set for Feb. 20-22.

Attorney and U.S. Army veteran James Mackler has bowed out of the race for U.S. Senate, just a week after former Gov. Phil Bredesen officially announced his campaign, the Nashville Post reports. Mackler had been in the race to replace Sen. Bob Corker for months prior to Corker’s decision to step down at the end of his current term. Mackler said that it was in the “spirit of unity” that he stepped down to clear a path for fellow Democrat Bredesen. Mackler instead will launch a political action committee called “Believe in Service,” to help elect candidates who will support national service programs.

Former Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Drewery was convicted today of illegally taking money from a drug dealer and attempting to have a witness killed, The Commercial Appeal reports. According to testimony, Drewery took a cash bribe to allow an arrested drug dealer to go free. It was discovered after Drewery was arrested for this bribe that he solicited an informant to find out how much it would cost to have the drug dealer killed.

Blount County Commission Chair Jerome Moon was sworn in this week as the new state House representative for District 8, The Daily Times reports. Moon was appointed by the commission to replace Art Swann, R-Maryville, who was chosen to take over the District 2 state senate position from Doug Overbey. Overbey resigned earlier this year after he was nominated to become the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. District 8 includes most of Blount County.

The law license of Georganne Brown Taylor was transferred to disability inactive status on Wednesday pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Taylor cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. She may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and she is fit to resume the practice of law.

The three men accused of the murder of 15-year-old Knoxville high school student Zaevion Dobson will not testify, Knoxnews reports. A jury could begin deliberations as soon as tomorrow. Prosecutors wrapped up their case against Christopher Drone Bassett, Richard Gregory Williams III and Kipling Colbert, who face first degree murder charges. Dobson died shielding two of his friends from gunfire in December 2015.

Amid controversy surrounding the state’s private prison operations, Tennessee lawmakers today reauthorized the Tennessee Department of Correction for one year, The Tennessean reports. TDOC commissioner Tony Parker promised that his department will punish Nashville-based private prison operator CoreCivic if it continues to fail to meet the obligations of its multi-million dollar contracts. In a letter to legislators, the executive director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, Hedy Weinberg, wrote that “ideally” the state would completely end its relationship with CoreCivic, but “at minimum,” the legislature must hold the company’s feet to the fire to ensure it protects its staff as well as inmates.

Andy Cole, the Republican who challenged House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh in 2016, is again seeking to win the House District 82 seat, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Cole is a native of the district, which includes Crockett, Haywood and Lauderdale counties. Fitzhugh has held the seat since 1995 but is now seeking the Democratic nomination for governor of Tennessee.
