The Alabama Supreme Court has blocked a lower court’s order to election officials that would have required the preservation of voting records in today’s U.S. Senate special election, The Hill reports. Yesterday, a circuit court judge ordered election officials to set voting machines to save all digital ballots, which would preserve voting records in case of a recount. Four Alabama voters had filed a lawsuit that triggered the order, arguing that the state is required to preserve the images.

The Memphis Bar Association elected new officers for 2018, with Lucie Brackin being chosen as MBA secretary/treasurer. She will automatically become vice president in 2019 and president in 2020. Elected as new board members were Frank Cantrell, Maggie Cooper, Peter Gee, Tannera Gibson, Matt May and Estelle Winsett. They join returning board members Mike Adams, Megan Arthur, David Bearman, Sherry Brooks, Leslie Coleman, Amber Floyd, Nicole Grida, Doug Halijan, Earl Houston, Sean Hunt, Steve Leffler, Jim Newsom, Lisa Overall, Jill Steinberg and Alexander Wharton. Newly elected section representatives are Margaret Chesney and Jennifer Sisson. Mary Wu Tullis is the new YLD President.

Memphis Area Legal Services last week presented The W.J. Michael Cody Access to Justice Award to B. Taylor Gray at the Memphis Bar Association Annual Meeting. The award recognizes a private attorney who has furthered the vision of "Justice for Those in Need" and has supported MALS' mission of providing excellence in legal advocacy for those in need. Gray represented several MALS clients in adoption proceedings and provided many hours of free legal support. He also was instrumental in establishing Bass, Berry & Sims as a Pillar Law Firm, which means the firm has agreed to be the first point of contact in MALS' efforts to place pro bono cases with private attorneys.

Hickman County native and U.S. Army Green Beret Matt Reel has announced his candidacy for the 7th district U.S. Congressional seat currently occupied by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Brentwood, the Nashville Post reports. Keel will face former Amazing Race contestant Justin Kanew in the Democratic primary. State Sen. Mark Green, R-Ashland City, and songwriter Lee Thomas Miller are competing for the position on the Republican side. Blackburn is currently running for U.S. Senate.

The TBA announced today that 30 attorneys from across the state have been selected for its 2018 Leadership Law program. Now in its 15th year, Leadership Law is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will meet for its first session in January, and then spend the next six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service. NASHVILLE, Dec. 12, 2017 — The Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) announces that 30 attorneys from across the state have been selected for its 2018 Leadership Law program. Now in its 15th year, Leadership Law is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will meet for its first session in January, and then spend the next six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday accepted a second case examining whether partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional, the ABA Journal reports. In this case, Benisek v. Lamone, Maryland Republicans are challenging the drawing of congressional districts with the alleged intent of putting a Democrat in office. In another case already on the docket, Wisconsin Democrats are arguing against an alleged partisan gerrymander of the statewide map.

The Blount County Bar Association elected officers for 2018 at its December meeting. Troy Jones was elected president, Carlos Yunsan was elected vice president, Amanda Jarret was elected treasurer and Steve Ogle was elected secretary.

In John Howard Story, et al. v. Nicholas D. Bunstine, et al., the Tennessee Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to following the “discovery” rule for determining when the statute of limitations begins to run in legal malpractice cases. At the urging of the plaintiffs, the Court analyzed other possible methods for determining when a legal malpractice action accrues, including the continuous-representation rule, appeal-tolling doctrine and final judgment rule, but concluded none was preferable to Tennessee’s current “discovery” standard. Justice Roger A. Page wrote the court’s opinion.
