Lee Thomas Miller, a country music songwriter and conservative advocate, is heading towards a run for the 7th district congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn, the Nashville Post reports. Miller, who has composed hits for the likes of Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley, has led volunteer lobbying efforts for the Nashville Songwriters Association International in the past. He says his timeline for jumping in the race is “sooner rather than later.” Currently, the only announced Republican candidate in the race is state Sen. Mark Green.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division is hosting a Wills for Heroes clinic this weekend in Memphis and is seeking available attorneys in the area to volunteer. The clinic will be held at Ben Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. A large number of clients have signed up for the clinic, which provides valuable end-of-life documents to first responders. To volunteer or for questions, contact Brandon Pettes.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tom Greenholtz has subpoenaed officials from private jail facility Silverdale Detention Center over five cases of inmate complaints about medical abuses, the Times Free Press reports. The complaints include untreated broken bones, denial of prescribed medication, irregular pill calls and more. Nashville-based CoreCivic operates the Silverdale facility.

According to a recent poll from Middle Tennessee State University, U.S. Rep. Diane Black and former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean have the highest approval ratings in the primary race among the announced gubernatorial candidates, The Tennessean reports. When combining results from both parties together, Dean and Tennessee House Speaker Beth Harwell have the highest approval. The same poll tested potential U.S. Senate candidates and found that Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and former Gov. Phil Bredesen had “statistically indistinguishable” approval ratings. Notably, announced Republican candidate Stephen Fincher, a former Tennessee Congressman, was not included in the poll.

An ABA committee is explaining the reasons for a federal judicial nominee recently receiving a “not qualified” rating,” the ABA Journal reports. The nominee, Leonard Steven Grasz of Nebraska, received the rating after “an extensive two-part review process,” according to the chair of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary. Grasz was nominated for the St. Louis-based 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and is currently a lobbyist and litigator with Husch Blackwell. The ABA review found that Grasz had a “passionately-held social agenda” that “appeared to overwhelm and obscure the ability to exercise dispassionate and unbiased judgment.”

A committee created over three years ago to address overcrowding at the Sullivan County Jail met last week and approved a recommendation to hire an outside consultant to create a “master plan” for the jail’s expansion, the Kingsport Times News reports. The goal of the plan is to find the best use of the 30-acre property that houses the Blountville Justice Center and other components of the county’s jail system. The measure now heads to the Sullivan County Commission for approval at its November meeting.

Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed Carter S. Moore of Cosby as Circuit Court Judge for the 4th Judicial District, which serves Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson and Sevier counties. Moore replaces retiring Judge Ben W. Hooper II. Moore has been self-employed as an attorney in Cocke County since 2009, practicing family law, criminal law, probate and estate law, and personal injury law, with an emphasis on family law. He has also served as Cocke County Attorney since 2011, working as general counsel for the various branches of Cocke County government. He obtained his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2008.

Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III today revealed criminal charges against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and two other campaign officials, The Washington Post reports. One of the three, George Papadopoulos, admitted to making false statements to FBI investigators. Papadopoulos is described in court documents as attempting to arrange a meeting between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. Manafort and his business partner, Rick Gates, were charged in a 12-count indictment with conspiracy to launder money, making false statements and other charges.

The East Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women (ETLAW) is hosting its Annual Supreme Court Luncheon at noon Monday at The Foundry in Knoxville. The luncheon follows the swearing-in ceremony in Knoxville for new admittees that morning. Individual tickets are $35 and new admittee tickets are available for $15. Tables of eight are available for $280 and tables of 10 for $350. Families and friends of new admittees are welcome to attend at the "individual" ticket price.
