Next week the Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) in Nashville will host two trainings aimed at explaining the legal ins-and-outs of TennCare and the Affordable Care Act. The first, on Oct. 16, will be held from noon to 4 p.m., and the second from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 17. Both will take place at St. Thomas Hospital, 4220 Hardin Pike, or via live webinar. Registration is available on the TJC website.

The Association for Legal Professionals Nashville Chapter (NALS) will host its 5th Annual NALS After Hours Silent Auction on Oct. 16. The event, which is free and open to the public, will still take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP. All of the proceeds generated at the auction will be donated to the Tennessee Justice Center. Shelby County Lawyer William C. Gosnell was suspended from the practice of law o Friday for four years by the Board of Professional Responsibility. Gosnell submitted a conditional guilty plea earlier this year acknowledging a failure to communicate with his clients and for misleading his clients and the court as to why he withdrew from cases as attorney of record. Gosnell is already serving a separate two-year suspension for another charge.

Sullivan County attorney Howard Robert Clyde was suspended from the practice of law by the Board of Professional Responsibility today. He is suspended for three years, with 90 days of active suspension. Orfield failed to communicate with or perform promised services for two clients from whom he had already received payment. He refunded one client. He must make restitution to the other client as a condition of reinstatement.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee and members of the Tennessee Supreme Court will host a reception as “a tribute to the generosity of the legal community through The Pro Bono Project.” The event will take place on Oct. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Press Room, 300 Clinchfield Street in Kingsport. Tickets are $25.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee, in partnership with the University of Tennessee College of Law, will offer a Pro Se Divorce Legal Advice Clinic for pre-screened individuals without children. The clinic will take place on Oct. 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. Spouses must be in agreement on all issues involving division of personal property, including vehicles, and division of all debts currently owed by both spouses. Volunteer attorneys from the Blount County Bar Association will join staff attorneys from Legal Aid of East Tennessee to provide free advice on various legal matters. The public will be able to seek advice on topics such as adoption, child custody and support, divorce, elder law, foreclosure, identity theft, personal injury, VA benefits, wills, worker’s comp, and more.  Legal help will be available on a first come, first served basis. The clinic is open to the public. No appointment is necessary. The Advice Clinic is part of LAET’s Pro Bono Project, and is offered in celebration of Pro Bono Month. The event is Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Southeast Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women (SETLAW) recently recognized its 2017 recipient of the Lioness of the Bar award, Marcy Eason of Miller & Martin, The Chattanoogan reports. Eason was honored at a reception on Sept. 28 in Chattanooga. One reason for Eason’s selection was her passion for promoting pro bono services and access to justice efforts, according to SETLAW president Sara McManus. Eason said the award was special to her because of the notable previous recipients, including Selma Cash Paty, Virginia Love and Judge Marie Williams.

A new memo from Attorney General Jeff Sessions says that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act does not protect transgender individuals from workplace discrimination, the ABA Journal reports. The memo retracts a previous interpretation from the Obama administration. American Bar Association President Hilarie Bass released a statement expressing disappointment with the decision. “For decades, the ABA has vigorously opposed such discrimination and, more recently, has urged the enactment of legislation to strengthen protections for LGBT workers to further the ABA’s belief that all Americans – regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity – should be protected from discrimination in the workplace,” Bass said.

Escaped Cocke County inmate Ezekiel Thompson was captured yesterday evening, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Thompson escaped in the early hours of Thursday morning by attacking an officer with the help of another inmate. He was later added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top 10 Most Wanted List.
