After Williamson County court officials inappropriately sealed the entire Brentwood Academy sexual assault case, the case has been unsealed and returned to the publicly available online record system, The Tennessean reports. The confusion stemmed from compromises reached in a Tuesday hearing, one of which included a protective order. Williamson County Circuit Court Judge Deanna Johnson confirmed yesterday that the case was sealed in error.

The U.S. Department of Justice told the Supreme Court yesterday it should drop a pending challenge to President Donald Trump’s travel ban because the ban has been replaced with a new version, the ABA Journal reports. The third and newest version of the ban removed Sudan and adds Chad, North Korea, and certain citizens of Venezuela. The DOJ said that due to the changes, the case is moot. It also asked the Supreme Court to vacate lower court rulings in the case.

A church congregant convicted of disorderly conduct for making an obscene gesture at his pastor was merely exercising his free speech, according to the Georgia Supreme Court. The ABA Journal reports that the state’s court reversed the conviction of David Justin Freeman, who was found by a lower court to have acted “in a violent or tumultuous manner” when he made the gesture towards Pastor Jason Berry of 12 Stones Church. The Georgia Supreme Court said Freeman’s conduct didn’t amount to a true threat.

Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands Gary Housepian said today that he is stepping down from the position he's held for 10 years. “It has been an honor to be part of this work for these past 10 years and to see our work expand to meet challenging situations – for youth, the elderly and persons who were formerly incarcerated – to fight barriers and shine the light of justice for all,” Housepian said. He will stay on with the organization until a new director is hired.

After U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn announced her planned bid for U.S. Senate, state Sen. Mark Green said that he will run for Congress to replace her, The Tennessean reports. The news is a reversal from Green’s previous decision not to seek any higher office this cycle. Green was previously under consideration to become President Donald Trump’s Army secretary, but withdrew after comments he made about Muslims and LGBT individuals surfaced.

U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn today said she is running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, The Tennessean reports. The news broke less than an hour after Gov. Bill Haslam confirmed he would not run. Also ending speculation of a bid for Senate is prominent Nashville donor Bill Freeman, who said he would not run for the Democratic nomination and instead suggested former Gov. Phil Bredesen should throw his hat into the ring.

The Brock-Cooper Inn of Court in Chattanooga awarded two attorneys with its annual Civility Award, the Hamilton County Herald reports. Richard Marcus of Chattanooga and Stephen Greer of Dunlap were the 2017 honorees. The award recognizes extraordinary civility among local lawyers.

A Cocke County inmate escaped today after assaulting a corrections officer, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Inmate Ezekiel Thompson attacked an officer with the help of another inmate around 5:25 a.m. The other inmate involved is still in custody. The escape comes shortly after a lawsuit was filed against Cocke County for wrongful death, and the loss of the jail’s annex certification due to two years of failed inspections.

Among the 59 people killed in Las Vegas on Sunday was Sonny Melton, a 29-year-old nurse from Paris, Tennessee. WKRN reports that Melton’s father, Camden attorney James Warren Melton, penned an emotional letter about his son, who died shielding his wife from gunfire. The letter is entitled “My Thoughts about Sonny and heroes.” A scholarship fund has been established in Sonny Melton’s honor, which will support Big Sandy High School students who wish to pursue a career in nursing.
