The Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice and Society at Lipscomb University will host a free legal clinic at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Schrader Lane Church of Christ, 1234 Schrader Lane in Nashville. Attorneys are needed to volunteer. Those who are available should contact Randy Spivey.

In an opinion filed today, the Supreme Court of Tennessee clarified when a serious bodily injury must occur during a robbery to elevate the crime to especially aggravated robbery. In State of Tennessee v. Antonio Henderson, the Supreme Court determined a serious bodily injury suffered by a victim of a robbery must be sustained during the robbery in order for the enhanced charge and punishment to apply. In deciding when a robbery is over, the Court concluded a theft is completed when a defendant has taken all of the property he intended to steal.

October is Celebrate Pro Bono Month, and all month long the TBA will be highlighting pro bono opportunities and events for Tennessee attorneys. A free legal help clinic will be held in Gallatin on Oct. 10, staffed by the Sumner County Bar Association. Wilson County attorney Mary Alice Carfi announced her candidacy for the Democratic primary in the special election for the 17th district state senate seat, the Lebanon Democrat reports. Carfi said her campaign will focus on the cost of healthcare, jobs and public education. The seat came up for grabs when Sen. Mae Beavers resigned her post in order to run for governor. Carfi is the only announced Democrat, while state Rep. Mark Pody is the only candidate for the Republicans. The primary election is scheduled for Nov. 7, with the general election on Dec. 19.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton of Arizona ended the criminal case against former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio today, the ABA Journal reports. Bolton ruled that the pardon Arpaio received from President Donald Trump in August was constitutional, despite the opposing perspective being shared in an amicus brief filed by University of California at Berkeley law dean Erwin Chemerinsky and two others.

A fundraiser will be held on Nov. 9 in Nashville to support of the Davidson County Veterans Treatment Court Foundation. The second annual “Honoring Heroes” event will take place at the Freeman Webb rooftop pavilion, 3810 Bedford Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will include a silent auction and hors d-oeuvres. Tickets are $75 per person, with several sponsorship packages available.

Knox County and an employee who accused her boss of harassment have reached an agreement this week in the case, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Janice Orr previously filed a $9.3 million lawsuit in January alleging sexual harassment and retaliation. The subject of the suit, Orr’s former boss, resigned last year after a human resources investigation. The county filed a countersuit in April, claiming Orr made false statements for personal gain.

Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris (D-Memphis) has entered the race for Shelby County mayor, The Commercial Appeal reports. He confirmed he will not seek reelection for the Senate seat he has held since 2015. Harris is an attorney and serves as a tenured professor at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law.

A resolution in the Hamilton County Commission to remove the bust of a Confederate general from a courthouse lawn has failed, the Times Free Press reports. The legislation would have moved the bust to “neutral ground.” The Memphis City Council has postponed a similar resolution, which would seek the immediate removal of a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, The Commercial Appeal reports. The council was scheduled to vote on the issue yesterday, but delayed the vote until after an Oct. 13 meeting of the Tennessee Historical Commission.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office won a $350,000 MacArthur Foundation grant to assist in reducing the jail population of low-level nonviolent offenders by 24 percent over the next two years, The Commercial Appeal reports. The grant seeks to reduce the jail population without hurting public safety, according to Shelby County Chief Deputy Floyd Bonner. This is the third grant Shelby County has received to support these efforts.
