Attorney General Jeff Sessions said today that the Justice Department will ramp up its support for students who sue universities over free-speech rights, the Associated Press reports. Sessions said free speech was “under attack” on campuses. He said the DOJ would be supporting a student from Georgia Gwinnett College who claims his rights were violated when school administrators limited where he could preach Christianity on campus.

Sen. Bob Corker will not seek reelection for the Senate next year, The Tennessean reports. Corker has served for two terms and chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Conservative activist Andy Ogles has already announced plans to run for the Republican nomination for the seat, and with this announcement more are expected to join the field.

After the controversy surrounding NFL players protesting the national anthem and the president’s condemnation of the protests, U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn filed a resolution yesterday over what constitutes proper etiquette during the playing of the national anthem, The Tennessean reports. Blackburn’s resolution is intended to reinforce federal guidelines over appropriate behavior during the song. “The national anthem is a source of American pride,” Blackburn said. “Our flag is the ultimate symbol of unity – uniting all Americans under one banner as ‘Americans’ – and we should respect it and those who have and continue to defend it.”

Shelby County attorney Darryl Wayne Humphrey was suspended from the practice of law on Monday for a period of six months. Humphrey executed a conditional guilty plea admitting he was administratively suspended in September 2015 and thereafter engaged in the unauthorized practice of law. He continued as counsel of record in five cases, and actively practiced in four of those cases. Prior to his administrative suspension, he failed to diligently represent a client and file a motion to amend a previous custody order entered by the court.

Colleagues, family and friends gathered at the Carson Springs Conference Center to celebrate the career of Circuit Court Judge Ben W. Hooper II, who retired Aug. 31. He served on the bench for 24 years. He practiced in Newport for 30 years before becoming a judge, and had served as a member of the Tennessee State Senate from 1975 to 1983. He presided over the Cocke County Drug Recovery Court since its inception and served on the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program for six years. “It has been a great honor to know Judge Hooper and learn from his common sense wisdom. I wish him all the best in his retirement, ” said Justice Sharon Lee of the Supreme Court of Tennessee.

In a story in Friday’s TBA Today about a settlement between Rutherford County and Providence Community Corrections, the item incorrectly stated that the lawsuit was over probate practices. The lawsuit concerned probation practices.

The American Bar Association sent a letter today to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee expressing opposition to the Graham-Cassidy health reform bill, which would partially repeal the Affordable Care Act, the ABA Journal reports. The ABA specifically focuses on Medicaid, which serves “our nation’s most vulnerable populations.” It cites the impact the bill would have on seniors, as well as children with disabilities.

The U.S. Supreme Court said today it will not hear oral arguments on the travel ban case as scheduled on Oct. 10, CNN reports. After President Donald Trump issued a new travel ban proclamation on Sunday, the court now wants to hear from both sides if the issue is moot. The one-page unsigned announcement from the court is not a final decision, but simply removes the case from the current oral argument schedule. The new travel ban, announced just as the previous one was about to expire, now includes North Korea, Venezuela and Chad, while removing Sudan.

The Tennessee Republican Party leaders will convene in Knoxville on Oct. 2 to discuss changes to the state party’s bylaws, including what defines a “bona fide” Republican, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Under the current policy, in order for a candidate to be considered a bona fide Republican, the person must be active in the state or local party. They also must have credentials that can be “vouched for” by an elected Republican or they must have voted in three of the last four statewide Republican primaries. The final part is what the party has changed, as the number previously was two of the last four primaries.
