The Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied a request from white supremacist Dylann Roof, who asked for new lawyers because his court-appointed ones are Indian and Jewish, the ABA Journal reports. Roof, who was convicted of the mass murder of nine black churchgoers, filed the pro se motion on Monday because he said the lawyers were his “political and biological enemies” and it would be impossible for them to represent him fairly. The court denied his request the following day.

A former Cheatham County inmate who sued three deputies for using excessive force has dropped his civil lawsuit, NewsChannel 5 reports. Ben Raybin, Jordan Norris's attorney, said his client reached a confidential settlement in the case. The lawsuit alleged that Cheatham County deputies used force amounting to torture when they tased Norris multiple times while he was strapped into a chair. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found that they had used a stun gun on Norris at least four times.

Judge Allegra Walker has appointed attorney Renard Hirsch Sr. as the new referee for the Nashville General Sessions Environmental Court, the Nashville Post reports. Hirsch has practiced for more than 30 years and also once served as an instructor at the Nashville School of Law. He is taking over for John Manson, who was appointed to become a night court judicial commissioner. Hirsch is coming into the job shortly after the creation of a new short-term rental complaint hotline, and as the Metro Council considers updates to short-term rental regulations.

Convicted mass shooter and white supremacist Dylann Roof has asked a court to remove his appointed appellate lawyers because they are his "political and biological enemies,” the ABA Journal reports. His attorneys are Jewish and Indian, and so, Roof claims in a motion filed in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, “it is therefore quite literally impossible that they and I could have the same interests relating to my case.” Roof made similar claims about his Jewish trial lawyer.

The city of Portland’s Board of Alderman decided to defer a vote that would have banned drag shows from the town’s business district, The Tennessean reports. The board debated for more than an hour on the topic Monday night, hearing from a standing room-only crowd that attended to weigh in. The board proposed a zoning ordinance that would have classified drag performances as adult entertainment. City attorney Davie Amonette addressed the board, requesting further review of the proposal. “I can assure you that you will be sued if you act hastily here,” he said.

Prominent conservative car dealer Lee Beaman announced the creation of a Super PAC to back Andy Ogles, candidate for the U.S. Senate seeking to replace Sen. Bob Corker in a Republican primary, the Times Free Press reports. Beaman, of Nashville, said he plans to raise $4 million to fight for “dependable conservative Senate representation for Tennessee.” Ogles served as the director of the Tennessee chapter of the Koch-brothers’ Americans for Prosperity until last week, when he stepped down to run for Corker's seat. Yesterday, reports surfaced that President Donald Trump was encouraging Corker to run for reelection, but the sitting senator has not yet officially confirmed his reelection bid.

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery is leading a bipartisan coalition of Attorneys General seeking documents from pharmaceutical companies related to an ongoing investigation into opioid manufacturing, The Tennessean reports. This information will enable the Attorneys General to evaluate whether manufacturers and distributors engaged in unlawful practices in the marketing, sale and distribution of opioids. Investigative subpoenas were served to Endo International, Janssen, Allergan and Teva/Cephalon as a part of the probe. Overdose deaths continue to rise in Tennessee, fueled in large part by both prescription and illicit opioids.

Tennessee-based conservative political commentator Scottie Nell Hughes has filed a lawsuit claiming she was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted by Fox News host Charles Payne, The Tennessean reports. Payne has previously said the two had an affair and denied harassing Hughes. The lawsuit claims Hughes was a victim of Payne’s on numerous occasions, and that she would have faced political repercussions had she refused Payne’s advances. She names Payne, Fox and two other Fox employees in the suit. Payne, through his lawyer, “vehemently denies any wrongdoing and will defend himself vigorously against this baseless complaint."

Bankruptcy Trustee Molly Williams will provide guidance on real property issues in bankruptcy cases. The final session will be a presentation on appellate practice with attorneys Jennifer Vallor Ivy and Samuel Ivy.
