Brentwood-based Counsel On Call, an on-demand legal services company, has bought Nashville based DSicovery LLC (DSi), which offers digital forensics and e-discovery services, the Nashville Business Journal reports. Counsel On Call will operate DSi out of its current Nashville officers. Both companies will continue to conduct business under their current names.

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission will consider five applicants when it meets Sept. 29 in Fayetteville to select nominees for the Circuit Court vacancy in the 17th Judicial District, representing Bedford, Lincoln, Marshall and Moore Counties. The vacancy was created when the Hon. Lee Russell announced he will retire effective Nov. 30. The applicants are: Marshall W. Burk of Shelbyville, Robert Dalton of Lewisburg, Trisha L. Henegar of Shelbyville, John H. Richardson Jr. of Fayetteville and Quinn B. Stewart of Lewisburg. The commission will interview the applicants at the Lincoln County Courthouse, Circuit Courtroom, 112 Main Ave. South at 9 a.m. The commission is expected to vote immediately following the interviews and forward three names to Gov. Bill Haslam for his consideration.

Vanderbilt Law School has announced the creation of a new program, the Turner Family Community Enterprise Clinic, which will provide legal support to entrepreneurs on shoestring budgets. The clinic was made possible via a $2 million investment by Cal Turner, Jr., and will offer students opportunities to help entrepreneurs with matters such as applying for tax-exempt status and drafting lease agreements. Lauren Rogal, assistant clinical professor of law, will direct the program starting this fall.

A former CEO and Tennessee state legislator was sentenced today to 21 years in prison for his role in a financial scheme, the Commercial Appeal reports. Larry Bates, alongside his sons and daughter-in-law, was convicted in a precious metals Ponzi scheme that impacted more than 360 people. Bates was ordered to pay more than $21 million in restitution.

Alisa Lashelle Simmons of Shelby County was reinstated today by the Tennessee Supreme Court, after being suspended in Oct. 2011. She will be required to have a practice monitor for 12 months. Simmons was found by a hearing panel to have shown clear and convincing evidence that she is fit to resume the practice of law.

President Donald Trump has officially nominated West Tennessee native Stephen Vaden as general counsel for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Vaden joins the long list of Jones Day attorneys to join the administration. He previously served as a law clerk to former U.S. District Court Judge Hardy Mays of Memphis and 6th U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Julia Gibbons of Memphis. Vaden held the job in an acting role prior to his nomination.

The Trump Administration today announced that it would end protections for the so-called “dreamers” – undocumented immigrants brought into the United States as children, The Washington Post reports. The move offers current enrollees in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program the chance to continue working until their permits expire, and calls on Congress to address the issue via legislation.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has named Mark H. Wildasin as acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, The Tennessean reports. The appointment was announced this morning, to fill the vacancy created by Jack Smith’s retirement last month. He will serve in the role for 120 days, or until the U.S. Senate confirms a presidential nominee. Wildasin previously served as chief of the office’s Civil Division.
