Prosecutors in a Chattanooga murder trial say that an eyewitness who had previously testified suddenly changed her story on the stand, the Times Free Press reports. Jayda Mayhue, whose boyfriend and two others are charged with the murder of 19-year-old college student Charles Holsey, told defense attorneys on the stand today that one of the accused, Briston Smith, was halfway to a car driven by Mayhue’s boyfriend by the time she heard shots ring out. Mayhue failed to mention that fact in three previous hearings.

The man called the “architect” of the Pilot Flying J diesel fuel rebate scam and three other ex-employees of the company have struck a deal with authorities to plead guilty and cooperate in the ongoing investigation, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Ringleader John “Stick” Freeman, John Spiewak, Vicki Borden and Katy Bibee signed plea agreements today admitting to their involvement in the multi-million dollar scam in which smaller trucking companies were promised certain rebates but were paid much less.

Memphis law enforcement and prosecutors announced a new campaign today to seek maximum sentences for gun violence, The Commercial Appeal reports. The “Fed Up” campaign will use advertising, aggressive investigations and tougher sentencing to attack gun crime in the city, where violent crime is up 9.9 percent in the first six months of 2017. County District Attorney Amy Weirich and U.S. District Attorney Lawrence Laurenzi said federal and county prosecutors will seek maximum sentences of 8-12 years under state law and 15 years under federal law for gun crimes.

Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle dismissed a suit on Friday claiming that a new measure assigning “natural and ordinary meaning” to terms in state law discriminates against LGBT individuals, The Tennessean reports. Despite the dismissal, the plaintiffs, four lesbian couples, say that the wording of the ruling has made it a victory for their cause. "We have a Tennessee court order saying same-sex couples are to be treated the same as opposite-sex couples," said Julia Tate-Keith, the attorney for the couples.

President Donald Trump has nominated Tennessee state Sen. J. Douglas "Doug" Overbey (R-Maryville) to serve as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. Overbey is currently a senior partner and co-founder of the Robertson Overbey law firm in Knoxville. He has practiced antitrust and commercial litigation law for 38 years. He has also served as the chair of the state ethics committee, and was once an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee College of Law.

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission today selected three candidates -- Lewis Lyons of Memphis, Tabitha McNabb of Germantown and David Rudolph of Memphis -- as finalists for the Circuit Court vacancy in the 30th Judicial District, which serves Shelby County. The vacancy was created by the retirement in June of Judge Robert L. Childers. The candidates now go to Gov. Bill Haslam for his consideration.

A judge has ordered that HRC Medical Centers and the company’s principles must pay consumers who purchased HRC’s bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), according to Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery’s office. Judge Don Ash granted the state’s motion for partial summary judgement in its suit against the company, which must now pay $18,141,750 for violations of the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. Additionally, the Court issued a permanent injunction barring the Defendants from engaging in conduct the Court has found unlawful.

A Florida family that stayed at Graceland this summer is suing Elvis Presley Enterprises over a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, the Memphis Business Journal reports. The suit, filed July 18 in Shelby County Circuit Court, is seeking $25,000 in compensation for both Douglas Johnson, who fell ill after a stay at Graceland’s Guest House, and his wife, Marisol Johnson, who “has in the past and will in the future sustain a loss of her husband's services and companionship." As of July 19, the Shelby County Health Department confirmed nine cases of the illness tied to The Guest House at Graceland.

Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson has been booked into the Bradley County Jail on six counts of forged vehicle titles, the Times Free Press reports. Watson has been under investigation since June 2016 for multiple instances of wrongdoing. They include using his authority to help get a woman with whom he had a personal relationship out of jail, potential misuse of county credit cards and other allegations.
