Guest speakers for the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services’ (TALS) annual Equal Justice University have been announced and include new TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson and TBA President Lucian Pera. Also scheduled to speak are Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeffrey Bivins and Nicole Austin-Hillery, director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Washington, D.C. office. The attorney for Johnthony Walker, the Chattanooga school bus driver behind the wheel of the deadly Woodmore crash, is seeking a diversion for sentencing, WRCB-TV reports. Walker faces six charges of vehicular homicide, and Hamilton County District Attorney plans to present additional charges. Judge Don Poole is expected to rule on the request as early as next month.

More than 50 sickened workers and the survivors of deceased workers are suing Jacobs Engineering, the California company that handled the cleanup of the 2008 Kingston Coal Ash Spill on behalf of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that the complainants allege workers weren’t told to wear protective clothing or masks despite the highly toxic conditions they were working in and warnings from the Environmental Protection Agency. At least 17 workers from the site have died since 2008. The case is set for trial in 2018.

The lead spokesman for President Donald Trump’s personal legal team has resigned and the president’s lead outside counsel will step down to a lower-profile role, Fox News reports. Spokesman Mark Corallo, who objected to public criticisms of the special counsel appointed to the Russia investigation, resigned just days after the president told The New York Times that he didn’t want Robert Mueller investigating his family’s business ties. Marc Kasowitz, President Trump's longtime personal attorney, will step down as the leader of Trump’s legal team after emails were published showing Kasowitz seemingly threatening someone who had criticized him.

The American Bar Association has come out in opposition to two bills that would require states to recognize concealed-carry permits issued by other states, the ABA Journal reports. All states allow some form of concealed carry, but laws vary across the country. If the two bills currently pending in Congress were to become law, it would be an offense to the “deeply rooted principles of federalism where public safety is traditionally the concern of state and local government,” said ABA President Linda Klein.

F. Lee Bailey, the criminal defense attorney who’s fame reached an apex when he served as a member of the “Dream Team” of lawyers defending O.J. Simpson, has filed for bankruptcy and been disbarred in the past year, The Washington Post reports. The details came to light after Bailey recently gave a detailed interview to Town and Country magazine. Bailey, who once lived a lavish lifestyle, was accused of misappropriating funds from his defense on an alleged drug dealer. He now lives in Maine, where he runs a consulting business above a hair salon.

Nashville judge Randall Wyatt said today that he is retiring after 43 years on the bench, The Tennessean reports. His last day will be Sept. 1. “I have enjoyed my time for the last 58 years working in the criminal justice system as a police officer, FBI agent, assistant district attorney, and finally as a judge for the last 43 years," Wyatt said. A Nashville native, he was first elected in 1982. Gov. Bill Haslam will appoint a successor to fill the remainder of Wyatt’s term, which was set to expire in 2022.

Inmates in White County are being given credit for their jail time for agreeing to have a vasectomy or birth control implant, NewsChannel 5 reports. General Sessions Judge Sam Benningfield signed the order allowing the new measures in May, and since then, 32 woman have received a free Nexplanon implant and 38 men are awaiting to have a free vasectomy procedure from the Tennessee Department of Health. The American Civil Liberties Union, however, says the practice is unconstitutional.

A Sumner County jury is hung over whether Timothy Batts is guilty of the reckless homicide of his 11-year-old daughter, The Tennessean reports. The young girl was shot by her father, who claimed that he thought an intruder was entering his home. Batts was found guilty of felony possession of a firearm and not guilty of one count of attempting to tamper with evidence.
