James H. Cheek III, a partner at Bass Berry and Sims, has retired from his position as professor at Vanderbilt Law School. Cheek started his legal career as a professor in 1968 before entering into private practice in 1970. He returned to teach again four years ago. Cheek has practiced law for more than 40 years, advising public companies in corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and securities offerings.

Two Nashville music publishers filed separate lawsuits yesterday against streaming service Spotify for failing to obtain the appropriate licenses for thousands of songs, The Tennessean reports. The publishers claim Spotify didn’t follow proper protocol and has been streaming the songs illegally. The plaintiffs are Bluewater Music Services, a publisher and music catalog administrator, and Bob Gaudio, a publisher and songwriter who penned hits for Frankie Valii and the Four Seasons.

The U.S. Supreme Court today allowed a lower court’s decision to stand that would exempt grandparents, grandchildren and other extended family members from the Trump administration’s travel ban, the ABA Journal reports. The Court did block a portion of U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson’s ruling that exempted from the travel ban refugees who have formal help from a resettlement agency.

A recent finance report from Sen. Thelma Harper (D-Nashville) showed that her campaign spent more money than was available in the account, The Tennessean reports. Harper’s campaign shows $8,771 in expenses but only $7,637 in the bank. Such a discrepancy could mean the candidate is spending money the campaign never reported receiving on previous statements, an offense which could result in fines.

Three lawyers have been reinstated by the Tennessee Supreme Court after being suspended for administrative violations. All three have been found to be up to date with previously delinquent registration fees and IOLTA requirements, and their annual registration statements have been returned to the Board of Professional Responsibility.

The disability inactive status of James Prentice DeRossitt IV, a Tennessee attorney who resides in Austin, Texas, was removed today by the Tennessee Supreme Court. DeRossitt was placed on inactive status on Oct. 13, 2013. His license to practice law will not be returned to active status until the resolution of any disciplinary proceedings pending before the Board of Professional Responsibility.

The law license of Alyse Dwyer Masserano was transferred to disability inactive status yesterday, pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Masserano cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. She may be reinstated by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing clear and convincing evidence that she is fit to resume the practice of law.

Knoxville lawyer William “Bill” Davis Sr. died on Sunday. He was 95. Davis was a World War II veteran and University of Tennessee College of Law graduate. In 1946, he joined the firm that would eventually bear his name, Egerton, McAfee, Armistead and Davis, where he practiced corporate and business law, taxation, and estate planning, and served as the firm's president from 1970 to 1990. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, with the family receiving friends following the service in Barron Hall. Memorials may be made to Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, 3700 Keowee Ave., Knoxville, or Philadelphians Prison Ministries, 4531 Old Broadway, Knoxville.
