The TBA’s Public Education Committee is seeking volunteers for the 2017 Lipscomb Law Camp, which will be held on the Lipscomb University campus June 12-16. Each year, Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice and Society hosts a class of high school students from across the country and educates them in matters of law and government. This year’s theme is “Constitutions and Constitutionalism,” and volunteer attorneys are needed to lead sessions June 12-15. Materials and suggested lesson plans will be provided. The Nashville Metro Council last night selected fellow Councilman Sam Coleman to replace General Sessions Judge Casey Moreland, who resigned in March following a scandal, the Nashville Post reports. Coleman rose to the top among eight candidates who submitted their names, with Ana Escobar, assistant prosecutor with the Nashville District Attorney’s Office, and public defender Martesha Johnson receiving the second and third most votes.

Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON), which provides legal services to immigrants, will host a fundraiser in Nashville called “Food from Inside the Travel Ban,” and will feature cuisine from Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Iran and Somalia. The event will be held at Vanderbilt University’s Wyatt Center on June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are available on the JFON website.

A special judge and prosecutor will handle the case of Shelby County Commissioner Justin Ford, who is accused of violently attacking his girlfriend, the Commercial Appeal reports. Ford faces charges of aggravated assault/domestic violence and false imprisonment for allegedly hitting his girlfriend while she was driving, then as she pulled over and attempted to escape, puilling her back into the vehicle, punching and choking her. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 6.

The embattled for-profit Charlotte Law School is now under a civil investigation from the North Carolina Attorney General’s office, the New York Times reports. This is the newest difficulty for a school that saw the U.S. Education Department cut off all financial aid to current students, lawsuits filed against it, and the ABA place it on probation. Attorney General Josh Stein said the state is looking into “whether students were able to make decisions about attending the school with the full information they needed.” Last month, Charlotte Law claimed its own students were at fault for not researching the institution’s low graduate employment rates prior to admission.

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) asked Congress today for $527.8 million for its next fiscal year, a $25.1 million increase over last year's request. Under a proposed Trump administration budget released earlier this year, the LSC would lose all federal funding, leading legal organizations to mobilize in support of it“LSC’s bipartisan Board of Directors recognizes the pressing need to expand access to our country's civil justice system through the delivery of legal aid,” said LSC Chair John G. Levi. “We agree that a significant increase in LSC funding is needed if we are to fulfill the promise of justice reflected in the first line of our Constitution." LSC distributes more than 93 percent of its funding to 133 legal aid organizations, including four in Tennessee

A global “ransomware” cyber attack is currently underway, and the FBI has asked the American Bar Association and other professional associations to disseminate information on warning signs and how to guard against such an attack. The “WannaCry” attack exploits critical vulnerabilities in the Windows operation system. The Tennessee professional privilege tax, which all licensed attorneys in the state must pay, is due on June 1. The $400 tax can be paid online here. To file, attorneys will need their Social Security numbers and their account ID or license number.

Facing a $1.6 million budget deficit, Hawkins County could be in jeopardy of a state takeover if its county commission cannot balance its budget, the Kingsport Times News reports. Tennessee Comptroller Chief of Staff Jason Mumpower said today that Hawkins County’s budget is the worst in the state. A state takeover would affect funding for fire departments, Hawkins County EMS and the Red Cross.
