Nineteen state attorneys general and one from the District of Columbia are calling for the appointment of an independent special counsel to investigation Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election, the Associated Press reports. Tennessee is not among those states. The group said in a letter yesterday to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that only the appointment of an independent special counsel can begin to restore public confidence.

A free program in Chattanooga will train pro bono attorneys to represent TennCare enrollees in enrollment and medical service appeals and contested case hearings. The program, called “Making a Difference for Families in Need,” will be led by Chris Coleman, a staff attorney with the Tennessee Justice Center. Lawyers in Rutherford County have formed a new professional organization to address issues of concern to women within the legal profession. The Middle Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women (MTLAW) was organized on March 16. Magistrate Diana Benson Burns was elected the group's first president. Any practicing attorney or law student who supports the goals of the association, which include improving the administration of justice, increasing the diversity of the bench and bar, and facilitating personal and professional networking between members, is eligible for membership. Persons interested in membership may contact the group via email.

After being sued for using his office to promote Christianity, Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson announced his department will add “In God We Trust” decals to all vehicles, the Times Free Press reports. "These four words are not just patriotic, but simply, part of this country's heritage," Watson said. Watson settled his previous lawsuit with the American Atheists Inc. and local plaintiffs for $41,000 last August, but says he’s not worried about the implementation of the decals.

Tennessee Congressman Scott DesJarlais (R-South Pittsburg) will face at least one primary challenger as well as a Democrat in the general election in 2018, the Nashville Post reports. Rutherford County teacher Mariah Phillips has announced her intention to run against DesJarlais as a Democrat, and former Chattanooga police officer Jack Maddux filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission last month to take on the incumbent in the primary. Phillips cited DesJarlais’ vote to repeal Obamacare as her inspiration to run, while Maddux cited DesJarlais’ inaction in Congress as his.

Metro Nashville has filed suit against the owners of The Social Club, a sex club that filed a site plan with the city to operate as a church, the Tennessean reports. The lawsuit alleges that the club is operating as a business, while their occupancy certificate granted by the city does not allow it. Sex clubs are allowed to operate only in industrial-zoned areas. Two codes inspectors gained entry into the facility by paying a $40 fee.

Retired University of Tennessee College of Law Professor Neil P. Cohen has died at the age of 74. He authored or co-authored 10 books, has been published in a number of law reviews, and served more than 30 years at the university. He also assisted the State of Tennessee in drafting the Rules of Evidence and the Tennessee Penal Code. More information about funeral arrangements will be posted when they are available.

The American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility has issued an opinion with guidance for lawyers on enhancing confidentiality for transferring sensitive client information electronically. The guidance recommends lawyers be trained in technology and information security and encourages attorneys to take a proactive role in ensuring communications are protected, among other edicts. The new opinion adds to one issued in 1999 that discusses protecting the confidentiality of encrypted email. Read the full opinion here.

Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Cornelia Clark, Sharon G. Lee and Holly Kirby served on a panel as part of the Southeast Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women's (SETLAW) Ladies of Justice "Lunch and Learn" event at the Hamilton County Criminal Courthouse in Chattanooga. The panel was moderated by SETLAW President Sara McManus of Baker Donelson. The justices spoke about how they decided to become lawyers, who their mentors were, the career challenges they have faced and their advice for other women.
