Businessman Mark Giannini returned to court today for a bond hearing after being acquitted last month on aggravated rape charges, though he has two other cases pending, the Commercial Appeal reports. His attorney earlier came under fire for claiming “women are good at lying” during the trial. Today he asked that Giannini be allowed to return to his home under house arrest before facing trial for drug charges and two more rape accusations.

An activist was convicted today and could face jail time for laughing during Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ confirmation hearing, NBC News reports. Desiree Fairooz was arrested on Jan. 10 for causing a disruption to the hearing when Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby said Sessions’ record of “treating all Americans equally under the law is clear and well-documented.” Fairooz allegedly let out a laugh at that moment. She faces a maximum of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

ABA President Lina Klein testified in the U.S. House of Representatives last week on the importance of funding the Legal Services Corporation, the nonprofit that supports legal aid offices across the county, the ABA Journal reports. President Donald Trump’s budget proposed eliminating all funding for LSC. “Funding for equal justice under federal law is a federal duty,” Klein said. “To strengthen legal aid is to strengthen the rule of law.”

The Tennessee Republican Party has named a new executive director, five months after electing a new chairman, the Nashville Post reports. Former TNGOP political director and deputy executive director Michael Sullivan will take the reins, after serving as the state director for the Republican National Committee in Iowa in 2015 and 2016.

A longtime Metro Nashville Parks employee has filed a suit alleging gender discrimination under former director Tommy Lynch, the Tennessean reports. Sally Davis, an employee of more than three decades, claims that Lynch took deliberate steps to keep Davis from getting promotions. Davis is asking a judge to order Metro to stop discrimination within the department, order training to prevent discrimination, pay her back wages and benefits and award her at least $300,000 in compensatory damages.

Jim Obergefell, the primary plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark same-sex marriage case, will visit the Tennessee state Capitol tomorrow to urge Gov. Bill Haslam to veto the so-called “LGBT erasure” bill, the Tennessean reports. The legislation requires undefined terms in state law to be given their “natural and ordinary meaning.” The measure includes terms such as “husband,” “wife,” “mother” and “father,” which are not explicitly defined in state law. It heads to Haslam’s desk after passing the Senate last week and the House last month.

One month into his service on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Neil Gorsuch has decided not to join the labor pool in which justices share their law clerks, the New York Times reports. The only other member of the court who is not part of the arrangement is Justice Samuel Alito. The pool is designed to streamline decisions about which cases to hear, but has been criticized for giving too much power to law clerks and for contributing to the court’s shrinking docket.

Former state Senator Joe Haynes, 80, has been charged with sexual battery, NewsChannel5 reports. The victim told police that Haynes tried to kiss her and grabbed her buttocks during a meeting in July 2016. The alleged assault took place while the victim was meeting with Haynes, an attorney, about legal matters related to the estate of her recently deceased mother. He was indicted by a Davidson County Grand Jury on Friday.
