The American Bar Association has filed an amicus brief in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to let stand an injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s travel ban, the ABA Journal reports. The brief was filed on behalf of the International Refugee Assistance Project and other plaintiffs. The ABA House of Delegates passed a resolution at this year’s midyear meeting, raising concerns about the original travel ban and urging the president to “not use religion or nationality as a basis for barring an otherwise eligible individual from admission to the United States.”

Christy Tosh Crider, a shareholder in Baker Donelson’s Nashville office, has been named chair of its Health Care Litigation Group, the Tennessee Ledger reports. She will continue to serve as chair of the firm’s Long Term Care Group, as well as the Woman’s Initiative. Crider’s practice is concentrated in the long-term care and behavioral health industries, managing the litigation of numerous long term care facilities around the country.

In a family dispute over land, the Tennessee Supreme Court has held that, where two persons own land as joint tenants with a right of survivorship, if one of them transfers her interest in the land to someone else, that action terminates both of the joint tenants’ survivorship interests. Justice Sharon Lee filed a dissent in which she argued it would be better to follow the law in jurisdictions such as Michigan or Oregon that do not allow a joint co-tenant to act unilaterally, protecting the rights and expectations of the joint tenants.

Lawyers for Alex Jones, conservative radio and YouTube host, and his ex-wife are battling in a child custody case about whether his online persona is who he really is, the ABA Journal reports. Jones, the personality behind Infowars, is famous for promoting conspiracy theories, but his attorney is arguing that the views presented on his show are all an act, calling him a “performance artist.” Attorneys for his ex-wife have submitted multiple Infowars videos as evidence to prove that Jones is “not a stable person.”

The FBI is investigating a nonprofit tied to former Nashville judge Casey Moreland and the drug court he presided over, the Tennessean reports. An FBI agent requested documents detailing reimbursements related to a conference attended by drug court staff, which were repaid by the Davidson County Drug Court Foundation.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands announced this week that it has relocated its Gallatin office to 106 Public Square, Suite 109. Three staff attorneys and two staff members work at the new location, providing free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals in Macon, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale and Wilson counties. All phone numbers to the Legal Aid Society’s Gallatin location remain unchanged.

Tennessee Rep. Brenda Gilmore, D-Nashville, announced her intention to run in 2018 for the state Senate seat now held by Sen. Thelma Harper, the Tennessean reports. Gilmore was first elected to the state House in 2006, and previously considered challenging Harper in a Democratic primary in 2014. It is unclear whether Harper will seek reelection next year.

Lawyers from Tennessee and other states will be in Washington next week to speak to members of Congress and their staffs about the importance of funding for the Legal Services Corporation as part of ABA Day 2017. The TBA effort will be lead by President Jason Long and will include President-elect Lucian Pera, YLD President Rachel Mancl, TBA Legislative Counsel Gif Thornton and Executive Director Emeritus Allan Ramsaur. Nashville attorneys Ann Pruitt from the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services and Jonathan Cole, president of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, will accompany the delegation as they visit each lawmaker from Tennessee in the American Bar Association's annual effort to connect policymakers with constituents in the legal profession.
