The license of Shelby County lawyer Ronald Kent Brooks was transferred to disability inactive status by the Board of Professional Responsibility yesterday. Brooks cannot practice law until he proves to the Tennessee Supreme Court that the disability has been removed.

The Metro Nashville School District won one case and lost another before the Tennessee Court of Appeals, the Tennessean reports. Both cases affirmed rulings by Nashville Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle. One upheld the ruling that the judiciary system can’t demand the state to provide the full amount of money for schools in its education funding formula. The court also affirmed a ruling that the right to a public education does not extend to the specifics of that education.

The Tennessee Senate unanimously approved a bill that would create a prescription drug-share program that would allow donations of packaged cancer drugs, the Tennessean reports. The bill would not allow opioids as a part of the program. If passed, nonprofit organizations would be allowed to donate and redistribute prescription drugs, still in their packaging, to people who don’t have insurance.

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned a $2.7 million sanction for discovery misconduct today, finding that a district court was mistaken for including legal fees beyond those resulting from the misconduct, the ABA Journal reports. The sanction was imposed against Goodyear Tire and Rubber and two lawyers representing the company for failure to disclose tire test results during discovery in a lawsuit. Justice Elana Kagan, who wrote the unanimous opinion, said that the district court has to follow a “but-for causation standard” when determining a sanction.

WATE profiled the Tennessee Youth Courts program, and highlighted some of the successes of juvenile restorative justice. The only youth court in East Tennessee is in Blount County, where Juvenile Judge Kenlyn Foster said she supports the program because it works. Youth court jurors in the area are trained by local law enforcement and lawyers for nearly 20 hours before hearing cases. “From youth court and from my experiences. I have learned to not judge a kid because you never know what’s going on with them,” says high school juror Iman Coffin.

Charles David Deas was suspended from the practice of law yesterday for six months, effective yesterday, with 60 days to be served as an active suspension and the remainder to be served on probation. Deas self-reported that he had been arrested for driving under the influence and possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and a petition for discipline was filed in response on May 9, 2016.

The license of Warren County lawyer Stevie Ray Roller was transferred to disability inactive status by the Board of Professional Responsibility on April 17. Roller cannot practice law until he proves to the Tennessee Supreme Court that the disability has been removed.

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission will consider six applicants when it meets May 1 at the MeadowView Marriott in Kingsport to select nominees for the Circuit Court vacancy in the 2nd Judicial District. The vacancy was created when Judge R. Jerry Beck announced earlier this year that he will retire in June. The applicants are Ashley D. Boyer of Bristol, Ricky A.W. Curtis of Piney Flats, Peter M. Filetti of Blountville, Mark D. Harris of Kingsport, John D. Parker Jr. of Kingsport and William K. Rogers of Kingsport. The Trial Court Vacancy Commission will interview the applicants and conduct a public hearing.
