Eugene G. Hale of Athens died on Friday. He was 85. Hale was a native of McMinn County and graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Law in 1957. He practiced law in Chattanooga for over 55 years, and also served as the president of the McMinn County Regional Humane Society. Services were held for Hale yesterday. Memorial contributions can be made to the McMinn County Regional Humane Society, 219 Alfred Street, Athens.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas state standards used to determine whether someone is mentally fit to receive the death penalty, the ABA Journal Reports. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the 5-3 majority decision, saying that “adjudications of intellectual disability should be informed by the views of medical experts,” while in the case in question, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals relied on seven evidentiary factors that did not cite “any authority, medical or judicial.”

Rhea County attorney and City of Graysville municipal judge Jace Cochran will appear on Jeopardy next week, the Rhea Herald-News reports. Cochran is a native of Rhea County and received his law degree from the University of Memphis’ Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He first applied for the show in April 2015. The episode will air on April 4.

President Donald Trump’s private attorneys said in court this week that he should have immunity from a defamation lawsuit because of his presidential duties, USA Today reports. In a court filing, attorneys argued that the supremacy clause of the U.S. constitution should bar the suit since it could “distract a President from his public duties.” The suit was originally filed on Jan. 17, just days before the inauguration.

Federal charges were filed today against Nashville General Sessions Judge Casey Moreland, WSMV reports. Moreland faces charges of obstructing criminal investigations, tampering with a witness, victim or an informant, as well as retaliating against a witness. He was taken into custody today and appeared in court this afternoon. He could face up to a maximum 20-year prison term if he is found guilty.

State Attorney General Herbert Slatery III said in a legal opinion that a bill requiring “In God We Trust” on license plates is “constitutionally suspect,” the Tennessean reports. Slatery’s opinion, released Friday, said despite the historical context of the phrase, it “clearly has religious overtones” and would violate the Constitution if it was added to all license plates. He adds, however, that having the option to include it on a plate would be more defensible. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Bill Sanderson (R-Kenton) and Sen. Paul Bailey (R-Sparta). The AG’s office issued the opinion at the request of Sanderson.

Knoxville lawyer Robert Fletcher Worthington died on Friday. He was 85. Worthington was raised in Clinton, served in the U.S. Army and attended the University of Tennessee College of Law. Alongside Howard Baker, Worthington formed the firm of Baker Worthington in 1964, which grew to become the largest firm in Tennessee until it merged to form Baker, Donelson, Bearman and Caldwell in 1994. Worthington served as General Counsel of the 1982 World's Fair, the Knoxville Utilities Board, the Tennessee Valley Industrial Committee, as well as the Tennessee Gas Association. He was a member of the first class of Leadership Knoxville, former Vice President and Director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Knoxville Public Building Authority. A celebration of life will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church Knoxville, with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials can be made to Zoo Knoxville, 3500 Knoxville Zoo Drive.
