Young Mayden, a national legal search and consulting firm with offices in Nashville and Charlotte, will open a Dallas office to be led by attorney and legal recruiter Amber Shockey. Founded in 2007, Young Mayden assists law firms with lateral recruiting and strategic growth initiatives.

The Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice and Society will host a free legal clinic at 6:30 p.m. on March 14 at Schrader Lane Church of Christ, 1234 Schrader Lane in Nashville, and attorneys are needed to volunteer. Those who are available should contact Randy Spivey.

The American Bar Association sent a letter to Congress this week in opposition to the Fairness in Class Action Litigation Act of 2017, the ABA Journal reports. Governmental Affairs Office Director Thomas M. Susman said the bill would “make it more difficult for large numbers of injured parties to efficiently seek redress in court; and place added burdens on an already overloaded court system.”

A CLE addressing basic and intermediate deposition techniques will be held at the Bar Center on April 6. Attendees will hear from experienced litigators who will discuss key components of the deposition process. Prosecutors are arguing former Chattanooga police officer Karl Fields concealed potentially exonerating evidence against a man facing rape charges to preserve a relationship he was having with the alleged victim, the Times Free Press reports. Fields, as an investigator with the major crimes division, allegedly had access to cellphone videos of the woman appearing to have consensual sex with the accused, but never turned them over to the DA’s office. He faces one count of tampering with evidence and one count of official misconduct.

The Metro Nashville Council voted 30-5 last night to approve the immediate purchase of 168 body cameras for police officers, the Tennessean reports. The resolution comes in response to demands from demonstrators for the council to take action following the death of Jocques Clemmons, who was killed by police at a public housing community this year.

Retired Judge Jerry Scott of Murfreesboro died Sunday evening. He was 75. Scott was a Vanderbilt Law graduate who served in the U.S. Air Force, where he worked in the Judge Advocate General’s Department and continued as a Military Reserve Judge. He went on to serve as a circuit judge in the 11th district, an appellate judge and as a senior judge for the state. A visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., followed by services at 5 p.m. at Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro.

Attorney General Herbert Slatery’s office issued an opinion determining that the planned outsourcing of facilities management at state parks is legal under state law, the Nashville Post reports. The opinion did include one caveat, stating that outsourcing must be approved by the State Building Commission.

Nonprofits in Minnesota have reported being targeted by a scam requesting employees’ W-2 information, and the scam is likely spreading, Nonprofit Quarterly reports. The scam begins with an email requesting lists of employees or staff earnings summaries, and it’s working – many have fallen victim to the scam. A computer forensic expert recalls that last year he was retained by four of the top 10 law firms in Minneapolis after they all fell victim. Those who have seen evidence of the W-2 scam can report it to the IRS.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and the Tennessee Justice Center were among those awarded IOLTA grants by the Tennessee Bar Foundation for 2017. Among the 29 organizations given grant funding this year, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Memphis Area Legal Services and West Tennessee Legal Services were also awarded top grants. The recipients are chosen through a very competitive process, according to Executive Director Barri Bernstein. Proposals are reviewed by a 14-member committee, which makes recommendations to the Foundation’s 12-member Board of Trustees, who make the final call.
