Nashville lawyer Christina Nicole Effertz died in January, a colleague at Cumberland Trust and Investment Company reports. Effertz had worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California (NDCA), the Federal Community Defender's Office in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and the Social Security Administration. Since 2014, Effertz served as Fiduciary Counsel for Cumberland Trust. In addition to her legal career, Effertz was active in the Ultimate Frisbee community where she played professionally and coached many young players.

The Pilot Flying J diesel rebate fraud scheme cheated not just trucking companies across the U.S. but also the federal government, according to a former Morgan Stanley broker who claims he helped the FBI in the original case. Knownews reports that John Verble, who is now asking the U.S. Supreme Court to grant a request for federal whistleblower protection, alleges that Pilot Flying J swindled the U.S. Postal Service out of large sums in promised fuel rebates. Pilot’s attorney said the accusation is not true.

The third CLE in the Modern Law Practice Series was held this morning in Nashville. The program examined artificial intelligence (AI) in the practice of law and featured presentations from Thomas Hamilton of ROSS Intelligence, Andy Daws of Kim Technologies and Larry Bridgesmith of Vanderbilt Law School. Durham School Services, the company contracted to provide busing services to Hamilton County Schools, said it should not be held liable in federal court for its role in the November bus crash that killed five students, the Times Free Press reports. The company responded to a federal class-action lawsuit filed against it in December, saying that the plaintiffs have “a proper and adequate remedy in a state court tort action.”

Four new judges in Tennessee attended the Administrative Office of the Court's Judicial Academy today in Nashville. Ted A. Crozier, Circuit Court Judge for the 19th Judicial District in Montgomery and Robertson counties, JoDea L. Jenkins, Chancellor for the 30th Judicial District in Shelby County,  Mary L. Wagner, Circuit Court Judge for the 30th Judicial District in Shelby County, and Valerie L. Smith, Circuit Court Judge for the 30th Judicial District in Shelby County, all attended the Judicial Academy after being either appointed or elected to their positions last year.

The Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) will celebrate 21 years of legal service as well as a new office space on Monday, and attorneys are invited to attend and join the festivities. Robert Lawson Cheek Jr. was disbarred on Wednesday by the Board of Professional Responsibility. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Cheek had power of attorney for all of a client’s business, financial, health and personal matters, and during that time he systematically withdrew approximately $53,500 from her retirement accounts without her knowledge. Cheek also set up a reverse mortgage in her name in the amount of almost $60,000 without her knowledge. Cheek was previously disbarred on May 15, 2014, and August 12, 2015, in unrelated cases.

The Administrative Office of the Courts often contracts attorneys to represent individuals unable to afford legal representation in cases in which a client is facing contempt of court charges for failure to pay court-ordered child support. The AOC is seeking attorneys who are interested in contracting with the AOC to streamline performance of this service in Davidson County Juvenile Court. The contract would be for March 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018.

Newly elected Chattanooga Bar Association President Bill Colvin was profiled by the Hamilton County Herald for his work fighting against attorneys who violate anti-solicitation rules or otherwise seek to exploit the public. Colvin cited the Woodmore school bus tragedy, in which five students died in a crash last November, as a catalyst for his crusade. As president, he said he also wants the bar to work towards educating the public on services local attorneys can provide. “We have to let people know LegalZoom is probably not the answer,” he said.
