Protesters Denied Permit by City of Memphis

A march organized by several immigrant and refugee rights groups was denied a permit by the city of Memphis, reports the Commercial Appeal. Protesters claimed the city relied on a technicality in order to suppress their First Amendment rights, after they were told that they needed to give notice 14 days prior to the event in order to obtain a permit. However, the city Code of Ordinances allows exceptions for “spontaneous events occasioned by news or affairs coming into public knowledge within three days of such public assembly,” provided at least a 24-hour notice is given to the city.

Grand Jury to Hear Thanksgiving Double-Murder Case

A grand jury will review charges against Joel Michael Guy Jr., a Knoxville man accused of killing his parents over Thanksgiving weekend, according to Knoxnews. Guy is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Joel Guy Sr. and Lisa Guy, after their remains were discovered dismembered and placed in an acid-based solution in their home. Guy was found and arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Nov. 28 and extradited to Knoxville earlier this month.

Lawmaker Files Bill to Nullify Marijuana Decriminalization

Tennessee House Criminal Justice Committee Chairman William Lamberth, R-Cottontown, filed a bill on Monday to repeal the partial marijuana decriminalization laws passed in Nashville and Memphis last year, the Tennessean reports. The bill would not only repeal the local ordinances, it would also prevent local governments from creating their own sanctions for drug possession moving forward. The Memphis and Nashville ordinances give police the option of handing out lighter citations for possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Campbell Found Guilty in MPD Shooting

A Shelby County jury found Treveno Campbell guilty of second-degree murder today in the killing of Memphis police Officer Martoiya Lang in 2012, the Commercial Appeal reports. Lang was shot while attempting to serve a warrant in a narcotics investigation. She became the first female officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the Memphis Police Department. 

SCOTUS Pick Expected Tomorrow

Multiple sources are reporting that President Donald Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court will be announced live on television tomorrow at 8 p.m. EST, according to the ABA Journal. Three finalists confirmed to replace Judge Antonin Scalia are Judge Neil Gorsuch of the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge William Pryor of the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Thomas Hardiman of the Philiadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Wildfire Claims Approach $1 Billion

Insurance claims resulting from the Sevier County wildfires have risen more than $100 million from previously reported figures, and now total nearly $1 billion, Knoxnews reports. The most recent report from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance shows total claims from residential and commercial property at upwards of $943 million, nearly double the losses initially estimated by Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters in December. Tennessee attorneys can still volunteer to help with relief effort by signing up via the TBA website.

Questions Surround Refugee Lawsuit After Executive Order

A planned Tennessee lawsuit to challenge refugee resettlement is up in the air following President Trump's executive order suspending resettlement in the United States, Nashville Public Radio reports. Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, backed the lawsuit, but now says attorneys are trying to decide whether the state still has a case. "It could mean that our standing is in question, depending on how long the moratorium lasts," Norris said Thursday. "What I may do is ask for a meeting with the new attorney general, with Jeff Sessions." The Tennessean has more. 

Tennessee Justice Center Celebrates 21 Years with Open House

The Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) will celebrate 21 years of legal service as well as a new office space next month, and attorneys are invited to attend and join the festivities. TJC will host an Open House and Happy Hour on Feb. 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the new office, located at 211 7th Ave. N., Suite 100, in downtown Nashville. RSVP to dwhaley@tnjustice.org.

Judges Block Trump Travel Ban, Tennessee Delegation Split

At least five judges over the weekend partially blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration, the ABA Journal says. Federal judges in Brooklyn, Boston, Alexandra, Los Angeles and Seattle issued injunctions. In Tennessee, Reps. Jim Cooper and Steve Cohen both say they will join fellow Democrats in sponsoring legislation that would bar the use of federal funds to enforce the travel ban, the Commercial Appeal reports. Tennessee Republicans in Congress defended the actions, calling them a "necessary step" to strengthening national security. Some also admitted the actions were sometimes poorly carried out.

Third Defendant Pleads Guilty in JailCigs Case

Former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold’s uncle pleaded guilty today in the JailCigs case, according to the Daily New Journal. John Vanderveer pleaded guilty to one count of witness tampering. Under the terms of the agreement, he faces a $250,000 fine and a recommended prison sentence of 18 to 24 months. Arnold and Joe Rusell also previously pleaded guilty in the case.
