Harassment Suit Seeks $9.3 Million from Knox County

A Knox County woman is seeking $9.3 million in a suit filed today that claims her boss at the county procurement office sexually harassed her, Knoxnews reports. Janice Orr originally filed a formal harrassment complaint against her boss, Hugh Holt, in August of last year. After a series of interviews with county employees, the investigative body recommended Holt be terminated in October. Holt was then immediately hired by the Knox County Sheriff’s Department at a higher salary.

Maryville attorney Joseph H. Nicholson passed away suddenly on Thursday. He was 69. In his career, Nicholson represented people who were fatally or catastrophically injured due to defective products or the negligence of others. He received an AV Preeminient rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and was the recipient of the American Association for Justice’s Award of Excellence. Visitation will be held tonight at 5 p.m. at Smith Mortuary in Maryville, with services to follow at 7 p.m.

Winfrey Merges Firm with Morgan and Morgan; Will Lead Employment Practice Group

Brian Winfrey, founder of The Winfrey Firm, is merging his firm into the Nashville office of Morgan and Morgan, where he will launch and lead a statewide labor and employment practice group, the Nashville Post reports. Winfrey will also work with Morgan and Morgan attorneys in other states in the employee rights group. Winfrey is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and currently serves as secretary of the Tennessee Bar Association.

NASHVILLE, Jan. 30, 2017 — John Porter of Vonore has been named the 2017 CASA Volunteer of the Year by the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (YLD). The award recognizes Porter’s six years of service as a volunteer for CASA Monroe.

Knoxville Settles Guns in Parks Lawsuit

Knoxville city leaders reached an agreement with Pandora Vreeland, who sued the city after officials declined to allow guns at Chilhowee Park, host to the annual Tennessee Valley Fair, reports WBIR. At issue is the state law allowing those with handgun permits to carry guns in parks. Officials claim the law does not apply to Chilhowee, which they said is an exhibition center. The agreement states that permit holders many bring guns to Chilhowee’s outdoor facilities as long as there is not an ongoing event that includes an admission charge.

ABA Urges SCOTUS to Hear Expedited Deportation Case

The American Bar Association is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case challenging the federal government’s right to deport immigrants without a hearing. Twenty-eight mothers arrested in Texas in 2015 are fighting against the U.S. government’s “expedited removal” process. The families claimed asylum, which would make them ineligible for expedited removal, but authorities deemed they had no credible fear of persecution and ordered their removal. Firm Names New Memphis Managing Partner

Bass Berry and Sims announced that John Golwen, who has been with the firm since 2004, has been appointed managing partner at the firm's Memphis office, according to the Nashville Post. Golwen has had a more than 25 year legal career, during which he worked on business litigation and related disputes. He also chairs the firm’s business disputes practices group.

Former Memphis Transit CEO Arrested in Human Trafficking Sting

The CEO of the Memphis Area Transit Authority who resigned on Thursday was among 42 people arrested in a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation human trafficking sting, the Commercial Appeal reports. Ron Garrison was arrested Wednesday and faces a misdemeanor charge of patronizing prostitution near a church or school. The TBI sting involved targeting individuals responding to ads on Backpage.com.

Harwell Launches Opioid Taskforce

A new legislative task force will tackle Tennessee’s growing opioid and painkiller abuse crisis, the Tennessean reports. House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, formed the task force to identify strategies to address addition, abuse and misuse of illegal and prescription drugs. The bi-partisan group will be chaired by Rep. Curtis Johnson, R-Clarksville.

House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, has opened a new campaign finance account for her 2018 race, according to campaign finance reports filed yesterday and reported by the Nashville Post. Additionally, Gov. Bill Haslam’s office announced today that senior advisor Leslie Hafner would be resigning her post to serve as senior policy advisor to Harwell. Harwell has not formally declared her candidacy for governor, but the Post reports that these signs appear to indicate her interest.
