Legal Aid Society Celebrates Leadership Cabinet

The Legal Aid Society (LAS) celebrated this year’s Leadership Cabinet at a Tuesday breakfast. The Cabinet is composed of 43 firms that contributed $400 per attorney towards the 2017 Campaign for Equal Justice. The campaign has raised $460,501 towards its $826,000 goal, with its official kick-off still almost six weeks away. Firms throughout LAS’s 48-county service area that wish to join the Leadership Cabinet should contact director of development Cindy Durham.

Judge’s Rulings in Cannon Murder Case Remain Sealed

In the criminal case against Caleb J. Cannon, accused of murdering his wife in 2014, details about what pieces of evidence deemed relevant for the jury to consider remain sealed and secret to the public, the Tennessean reports. Deborah Fisher, executive director of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government, said it is odd that the case remains sealed since  much of the evidence in question has already been presented in public hearings. "When a judge decides to keep her ruling confidential, it would help the public’s understanding of the courts to explain why," Fisher said.

More Names from Legal Community in 40 Under 40

The Nashville Business Journal released its annual 40 Under 40 list yesterday, and in addition to the names highlighted in TBA Today, the publication also honored four more people from the legal community. Reen Baskin, deputy director of the Tennessee Office of Customer Focused Government; David Crenshaw, CFO of Confirmation.com; Kim Hollingshead, CEO at Touchstone Title & Escrow, COO at Smart Title & Escrow and regional developer at EXIT Realty Tennessee/Kentucky; and Shaka Mitchell, regional director at Rocketship Education.

Memphis, Shelby Leadership Create Legislative Wish List

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell will push the state legislature this year on a range of topics via a wish list presented to the Memphis City Council on Saturday. The list includes reducing expungement fees, stiffer sentences for convicted felons illegally in possession of firearms, equitable funding for the housing of state inmates in local jails and more. Chief Judge Sharp to Resign, Launch New Practice

Chief U.S. District Judge Kevin H. Sharp resigned today, the Tennessean reports. The Nashville judge confirmed to the newspaper that he has submitted his resignation letter to President Donald Trump, whose administration will now need to nominate two people to federal judgeships in the Middle District of Tennessee. Judge Todd Campbell announced last fall that he would be taking senior status. The Nashville Post reports that Sharp will shift his focus to opening a Nashville office for Sanford Heisler, an employment and public interest law firm that has two offices on each coast.

Tennessee Supreme Court Amends Pro Hac Vice Rule

The Tennessee Supreme Court today issued an order amending TN. Sup. Ct. R. 19 on pro hoc vice appearances permitting lawyers who have been granted permission to practice pending admission to seek pro hac vice permission to appear in court. The TBA commented supporting the change.

Sevier County Lawyer Disbarred

Sevierville lawyer Jerry DeWayne Kerley was disbarred today, retroactive to June 21, 2012. The Tennessee Supreme Court suspended Kerley on June 21, 2012, based upon his conviction of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, false statements and money laundering. A Board of Professional Responsibility hearing panel found that Kerley should be disbarred. 

Davidson County Lawyer Placed on Disability Inactive Status

The license of Howard MacArthur Romaine of Davidson County was transferred to disability inactive status on Tuesday. Romaine cannot practice law until reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing evidence the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume practice.
