Are Resume Lies Grounds for Disbarment? Michigan Says Yes

A Michigan state attorney disciplinary board said that a lawyer should be disbarred for alleged lies on his resume, according to the ABA Journal. Ali Zaidi made misrepresentations in his resume and online, including inventing fictional summer associate positions, falsely claiming he was admitted to practice in states that he wasn’t, and even claiming that he was on the U.S. field hockey team in the 1996 Olympics.

SCOTUS Will Not Hear Texas Voter ID Appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear an appeal from Texas that seeks to revive the strict voter ID requirements a lower court found had a discriminatory effect on minorities, reports Reuters. A 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision found that the 2011 Texas law violated the U.S. Voting Rights Act, and the appeals court directed a federal district court to examine claims by the plaintiffs that the law was actually intended to be discriminatory, rather than merely having a discriminatory effect. A hearing on that case was scheduled for today but has been delayed following a request from President Trump’s administration. 

Legal Battle Over Senator's Estate Continues

The legal dispute between the late U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson’s wife and his two adult sons from another marriage will continue, the Tennessean reports based on court documents filed last week. Thompson’s sons, Tony and Dan Thompson, filed suit against Thompson’s wife, Jeri Thompson, in August, accusing her of forcing him to make changes to his estate plan. New court documents show a fight over what information Jeri Thompson must turn over as the case moves forward. 

Tennessee Supreme Court Will Hear Hendersonville Woman’s Appeal

The Tennessee Supreme Court said Monday it will review the appeal of Lindsey Lowe, a Hendersonville woman who was convicted of smothering her newborn twins to death in 2011. According to the Tennessean, Lowe’s defense argued that key evidence should not have been used against her, including a “good faith” exception to a search warrant used on the bedroom in Lowe’s home. Lowe was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in March 2013. During the trial, it was alleged Lowe killed the babies to conceal her pregnancy from her family and fiance.

Washington County Man Found Guilty of Aggravated Child Abuse

A Washington County jury has found a Telford man guilty of aggravated child abuse, reports the Johnson City Press. Joe Whitaker, 44, was accused of injuring his 7-month-old son so severely that his brain bled. Medical professionals testified that the child’s injuries were indicative of abuse, although Whitaker maintained his innocence throughout the trial. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 21, where he will face 15 to 25 years in prison and will serve 100 percent of his sentence. 

Trial Begins in Memphis Police Murder

The trial of a man accused of the 2012 killing of Memphis police officer Martoiya Lang began today, reports the Commercial Appeal. Treveno Campbell, 25, is charged with killing the nine-year veteran and mother of four while she was attempting to serve a search warrant. Campbell pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Judge Sammons Placed on 3-Year Probation

Campbell County Judge Amanda Sammons was today placed on a three-year probation by the Board of Judicial Conduct. The judge last year faced charges of official misconduct, but they were thrown out by Senior Judge Paul Summers, who found the state had failed to present enough proof for a jury to consider the case. Sammons agreed to the terms of her probation, which include having Criminal Court Judge Shayne Sexton serve as a mentor, and that she attend the General Jurisdiction Course at the National Judicial College at her own expense. 

Details Set for Attorney Town Halls in Memphis

Details have been finalized for two town hall meetings for lawyers hosted in Memphis by Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown. Sen. Kelsey will host criminal law practitioners on Jan. 26 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. CST and civil law practitioners on Jan. 27 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. CST. Both meetings will take place at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, 1 N Front Street, in Room 230. Sullivan County Lawyer Suspended

Jessica D. Jones of Bristol was suspended from the practice of law on Friday. Jones had failed to show cause as to why her license should not be suspended after defaulting on a loan guaranteed by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation.

Title IX Complaints Double at UTK

Title IX complaints reported at the University of Tennessee have more than doubled in the last year, and have risen by more than 100 times what was reported in 2013, according to Knoxnews. The figures come from a Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury report, which also showed an increase in complaints under the Tennessee Board of Regents. Officials said the growth was due in part to an increase in reporting and in part to changes in reporting requirements, rather than an increase in violations.
