Diversity Leadership Institute Class of 2017 Selected

The YLD Diversity Committee this month selected 20 law students from six different Tennessee law schools for the 2017 Diversity Leadership Institute, a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students. Now in its seventh year, the program is designed to develop skills to succeed as a law student and attorney; empower students to contribute more to the legal community; match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas; and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. Offers to join the class are now pending with the students.
 
The 2017 Diversity Leadership Institute program will begin with an opening retreat Jan. 13-14 in Nashville. At the retreat, participants will get to know fellow class members and be introduced to leadership and diversity concepts that will be explored throughout the program. During the six-month program, participants will be required to meet with a mentor at least twice, complete one community service activity, and attend two continuing legal education seminars, at least one of which must include a diversity component. The Institute will conclude with a final session and graduation ceremony during the TBA Annual Convention in Kingsport in June.

TBA Executive Director Ramsaur to Step Back from Day-to-Day Management

Will stay on as Emeritus Director to handle legislative, strategic initiatives

NASHVILLE, Dec. 16, 2016 — Effective the first of the year, Allan Ramsaur, longtime executive director of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA), will begin stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities for administration of the association. He will assist in the search for and retention of a new executive director for the association and will transition into the role of emeritus director.

Deadline Extended for Law Student Leadership Program

The deadline for law students to apply to the Diversity Leadership Institute, the TBA's six-month leadership development and training program, has been extended to Dec. 21. The program, now in its seventh year, is open to all 2L, 3L and 4L students attending a Tennessee law school. The goal of the institute is to develop skills to succeed as a law student and attorney, empower students to contribute more to the legal community, match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. Tennessee Lawyers and Law Student to be Recognized for Commitment to Public Service

Honorees to be recognized at awards luncheon in January

NASHVILLE, Dec. 12, 2016 — Two distinguished Tennessee attorneys and a recent University of Tennessee College of Law graduate will be honored with the state’s top public service awards at a ceremony in January. The awards will be presented by the Tennessee Bar Association at its 2017 Public Service Luncheon on Jan. 14 at the Downtown DoubleTree Hotel in Nashville. Held each year as part of the association’s Leadership Conference, the luncheon also will feature remarks by TBA President Jason Long and other leaders from the legal community.

TBA Selects Attorneys for 2017 Leadership Law Class

36 lawyers from across the state join six-month leadership training program

NASHVILLE, Dec. 6, 2016 — The Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) announces that 36 attorneys from across the state have been selected for its 2017 Leadership Law program. Now in its 14th year, Leadership Law is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will meet for its first session in January, and then spend the next six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service. 

YLD Disaster Relief Committee Calls for Volunteers to Respond to Wildfires

Following devastating wildfires in the Smoky Mountains and the call from the TBA and other legal groups to offer assistance to victims, the TBA Young Lawyers Division has activated its Disaster Relief Committee and is requesting all hands on deck.
 
The YLD will be assisting the legal effort through volunteer recruitment, as many attorneys will be needed. Volunteers statewide can respond to calls on the HELP4TN helpline or the TN Free Legal Answers website, and volunteers in East Tennessee are needed for expected in-person clinics.
 
However, not all legal help is needed right now. Some victims might not be able to assess their damages for weeks or months. So we are putting the call out now, in order to create a database of attorneys who are available to help in person or via the helpline or website.

Tennessee Lawyers Offer Legal Assistance to Gatlinburg Wildfire Victims

NASHVILLE – December 1, 2016 – In response to the devastating wildfires in Gatlinburg and Sevier County, the Tennessee Bar Association is partnering with the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS), Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) and the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission to help those affected with their legal needs.
