YLD Invited Guest News for November 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. Here are those organizations.
 
Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) – The AWA recently had its New Attorney Welcome and Membership Social for new attorneys that have passed the bar. The group will be having a judicial reception on December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 571 S Belvedere Blvd., Memphis, Tennessee, 38104. The group’s annual banquet will be held on January 17, 2017 at the Tower Room in Memphis.

East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – On November 7, ETLAW held its annual Supreme Court Luncheon at the Foundry. Over 125 judges, attorneys and guests attended the event honoring the Tennessee Supreme Court Justices. Also at the event, Wynne du Mariau Caffey Knight was presented with ETLAW’s highest award, the Spirit of Justice Award.
 
Please join us on Wednesday, December 14 at 12 pm for ETLAW’s Annual Meeting and YWCA Toiletry Drive at the Foundry. The cost of an individual ticket is $35 and can be purchased here:  ETLAW's Annual Meeting & Toiletry Drive Event.  At the event, ETLAW packs “welcome bags” for the women entering YWCA housing. Each welcome bag contains shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, razors, soap and other toiletries. You can sign up to bring toiletry items using the registration link above. You can also make a monetary donation. If you do so, please e-mail ETLAW President Catherine Anglin noting the amount and send the check, made payable to “ETLAW,”  to Heather Ferguson at 900 S. Gay Street, Suite 1400, Knoxville, TN 37902.

Submit Your Nominations for 2017 CASA Volunteer of the Year

The YLD Children’s Issues Committee is accepting nominations from Tennessee CASA agencies for the 2016 CASA Volunteer of the Year Award but the deadline is coming up fast! All applications must be submitted by Dec. 15.

Please encourage your local CASA directors to nominate a hard-working volunteer for this statewide recognition! The winner, as well as the executive director of the agency where the volunteer works, will be recognized at the YLD Winter Board Meeting in Nashville in January. 2017 Mock Trial Case Released

The case for the 2017 Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Competition was released this month by the TBA Young Lawyers Division’s Mock Trial Committee. 

This year’s problem is a criminal case, involving the death of a patient at a nursing home facility and a standout high school student employed there. This year’s state competition will take place March 17-18 at the Metro Courthouse in Downtown Nashville. The winning team will get a chance to take part in the National High School Mock Trial competition in Hartford, Connecticut, in May.

New Attorneys to Be Sworn In Across Tennessee

The Tennessee Supreme Court will be traveling across the state over the next 10 days to swear in some of Tennessee’s newest attorneys. 
 
More than 450 people passed the July 2016 bar exam and hundreds of them choose to be sworn in to the practice of law by the Tennessee Supreme Court. 
 
The TBA YLD will be sending volunteers to all of the ceremonies to greet and assist the new attorneys. We still need volunteers for the Nashville event on Nov. 8. Those who can participate should contact Kathy Prescott.

TBA YLD Assists Music City Community Courts

The TBA YLD once again participated as a community partner for a very successful expungement clinic on Oct. 1 in Nashville through the Music City Community Courts program, led by Judge Rachel Bell. TBA YLD Diversity Committee Chair Amber Floyd helped organize the event and recruit young lawyer volunteers. Read more here. 

The next Saturday clinic will be hosted by Nehemiah Missionary Baptist Church at the Boys & Girls Club located at 916 16th Ave. N, Nashville, 37208 on Nov. 19.

East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – At ETLAW’s monthly meeting on Oct. 19, Melanie D. Wilson, Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Law spoke about Miranda v. Arizona and the history both before and after the decision.
 
On Oct. 20, ETLAW supported the UT College of Law’s Law Women’s 12th Annual Chili Cook-off benefiting the YWCA Knoxville. ETLAW won third place with its Spicy Sweet Corn and Venison Tenderloin chili.
 
On Oct. 22, approximately 23 ETLAW and UT Law Women members, family and friends joined together to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Knoxville. ETLAW’s race shirt (provided to all team members) won the T-shirt competition.
 
ETLAW will be hosting its Annual Supreme Court Luncheon on Nov. 7 at noon at The Foundry in Knoxville. All are welcome to attend. The cost of an individual ticket is $35 and New Admittees can attend for only $15. The luncheon follows the swearing-in ceremony in Knoxville that morning. Lawyers Association for Women, Marion Griffin Chapter – The Lawyers Association for Women – Marion Griffin Chapter will host its Annual New Admittees’ Breakfast on Nov. 8 at Music City Center, 201 5th Avenue South, in the Davidson Ballroom. The New Admittees' Breakfast has been a signature event in the Nashville legal community for 40 almost years. The event is attended by more than 300 new admittees, judges, local bar dignitaries and attorneys. This year we are excited that Metropolitan Davidson County Juvenile Court Judge Sheila Calloway is the keynote speaker. Judge Calloway was elected Judge of the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Juvenile Court in August 2014. Prior to becoming Judge, she served as Juvenile Court Magistrate for 10 years. Judge Calloway is active in many organizations that advocate for students in the Metro Nashville Public Schools. She serves on the state-wide Advisory Board of Tennessee Voices for Victims and is a member of local bar associations. Click here to register.

National Bar Association, S.L. Hutchins Chapter – The NBA S.L. Hutchins Chapter recently held its first Annual Chattanooga Law Leadership Academy for high school students to introduce them to the practice of law. The 2-day academy consisted of local high students interested in pursuing a legal career in the 10th-12th grades and occurred during the students’ fall break. The students interacted with Judge Christie Sell, Judge Don Poole and County Attorney Rheubin Taylor. The students participated in a mock mediation, a mock trial, field trips to the courthouse and programing from local attorneys in various areas of the law. The academy was a great success, as led by TBA YLD member Ariel Anthony.

Help Improve the TBA by Completing Our Communications Survey

How do you communicate with your clients and your colleagues? What methods of social media do you use, and how do you integrate that with your practice? You can sound off on these topics and more, and help the TBA serve you better!

Make sure your voice is heard by taking part in the TBA Members’ Survey on Communications being conducted right now by Yacoubian Research. If you have not yet completed the survey, you should have received a reminder email last week. Please follow the link in that email and complete the questionnaire. The TBA needs your help identifying the communications needs and practices of Tennessee lawyers so we can continue to improve our methods of communicating with you. If you have started the survey, but not completed it, please take a few minutes to answer the remaining questions. The deadline for participation is Nov. 4.

Knoxville Bar Association Barristers – The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast is a recurring event on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:15 a.m. The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast Committee always needs volunteers to serve food or sponsor. Sign up here. The Barristers will host a reception to welcome new bar admittees on Nov. 7 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at Calhoun's on the River, 400 Neyland Drive. Register by Nov. 4 here. The group is currently seeking Barristers to serve as Officers in 2017.  The following officers for the 2017 bar year are open for nomination: Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and two (2) At-Large Executive Committee Seats. Please note that the person elected Vice-President in December will automatically become the Barristers President for the 2018 bar year. Candidates must be current KBA members.

Memphis Bar Association YLD –  Join the Memphis Bar Association Young Lawyers Division for its Annual Meeting and Elections on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Central Barbecue (downtown location). Come cast your vote for YLD Vice President/President-Elect, Board of Directors and Outstanding Judge of the Year. Voting will close at 6:30 pm. Before the night is over, the gavel will be passed and the results of the election will be announced. The group is also currently accepting votes for the Charles A. Rond Award.

Mock Trial Coaches Needed in Shelby County

Two high schools — Craigmont High School and Collierville High School (both in Shelby County) — are seeking attorney volunteer coaches for their mock trial teams. Even a few hours of consultation would be helpful to these students and they would appreciate the guidance. Coaches are needed immediately. Attorneys will work alongside a faculty advisor from the school, who would handle administrative duties for the team. Diversity Leadership Institute Accepting Applicants for 2017 Class

Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 class of the Diversity Leadership Institute (DLI), the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division's six-month training and development program for law students. 
 

Now in its seventh year, the DLI is designed to develop skills to succeed as an attorney, empower students to contribute to the legal community, match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. Interested applicants must be enrolled in a Tennessee law school and must be in their second, third or fourth year of study. To be accepted into the program, student must be TBA law student members.
