Wills for Heroes Clinics (as of 7/29/16)

The YLD Wills for Heroes program provides free wills and other end of life documents for first responders in Tennessee. The following clinics have been scheduled for the spring. Please contact the event organizer for more details or to volunteer.

Houston Firm Sues Ex-Client Over Negative Online Reviews

A law firm in Houston is suing a former client who posted negative reviews about the firm’s attorneys on Yelp and Facebook. The Law Offices of Tuan A. Khuu and Associates is alleging defamation in its suit against 20-year-old Lan Cai, who posted on Yelp that the attorneys “were very pushy” and unresponsive. Cai also wrote on Facebook that the firm was “super unprofessional.” Firm attorney Keith Nguyen said the suit was filed after Cai refused to comply with a cease-and-desist letter, asking her to remove the posts. YLD Invited Guest News for July 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – ETLAW recently hosted its monthly meeting joined by guest speaker Senator Doug Overby, who provided his annual Legislative Update, and by Senator Richard Briggs who explained the InSureTN program.  
 
The group will be hosting its next Monthly Meeting on August 17 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the downtown Knoxville YWCA, where Professor Judy Cornett (UT Law) and Professor Matt Lyon (LMU Duncan School of Law) will be discussing the new summary judgment standard in Tennessee. For the 8th year, ETLAW will have a team for the Knoxville Race for the Cure. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 22. The team is open to all members of ETLAW, their friends, family and co-workers of all ages. With registration, you will receive a long-sleeved race t-shirt from Komen. To be part of ETLAW’s team, go to www.komenknoxville.org, then take these steps: “Events," “Race for the Cure," “Register" and “Join a Team.” Create an account or log in as a former participant.  You will then be asked to find the team, which is “East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women.” All registrations and donations are made through Komen’s secure site.  Komen will provide a receipt for tax purposes for any donation over the registration fee.

Chattanooga Bar Association YLD – The Chattanooga Bar Association YLD recently assisted in gathering donation items for Legal Aid of East Tennessee’s Pro Bono Night. The group continues to have monthly social happy hours and quarterly Coffee Talks with local judges throughout this upcoming year. The group’s next social happy hour will be on August 24 at 5:30 p.m. at The Bitter Alibi, and the group will be voting to amend their Bylaws at this meeting.

The Barristers will be hosting a program to train pro bono attorneys to represent TennCare enrollees in enrollment and medical service appeals and contested case hearings. North Carolina Voter ID Law Struck Down

A federal appeals court today struck down North Carolina’s voter ID law, finding that it was “passed with racially discriminatory intent,” Politico reports. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals panel was unanimous in its rebuke. This decision comes after U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Schroeder issued a decision in April upholding the law. Earlier this month, a federal court ruled that a similar law in Texas violated the Voting Rights Act. Tennessee also has a voter ID law on the books.

Predators Lawsuit Sent to Arbitration

The Nashville Predators hockey team scored a key legal victory today, when team co-owner David Freeman’s $250 million lawsuit against the franchise was sent to arbitration, the Nashville Business Journal reports. Freeman sued the Predators on June 23, saying he had been unfairly and illegally pushed aside. Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle granted a motion made by the National Hockey League to force Freeman's dispute to go back under the supervision of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Suit Filed in Bradley County Police Shooting

A suit has been filed in the case of a 23-year-old man shot by a Bradley County Sheriff’s Deputy last July, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports. The family of Allan F. Light III filed a lawsuit in Bradley County Court in Tuesday, stating that Deputy Tiffany Oakley needlessly killed Light and that the sheriff’s office covered up the incident. In Oakley’s statement given when the shooting occurred, Oakley said she was assaulted by a stranger outside of her home and used deadly force to defend herself. The lawsuit claims Light and Oakley were familiar, and that Light was unarmed and attempting to get away.

Purkey Named Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner

Gov. Bill Haslam named David Purkey the new commissioner of the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the Nashville Post reports. Purkey worked under the previous commissioner, Bill Gibbons, as the assistant commissioner since 2011, and also served as the director of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency since 2014. He will assume his position Sept. 1.

Save the Date - Mock Trial 2017 and Beyond

Mark your calendars - dates for the next three Tennessee State High School Mock Trial competitions have been decided. 

• March 17-18, 2017

• March 23-24, 2018

• March 22-23, 2019

The 2017 problem is expected to be released in late fall this year, with local qualifying competitions taking place in January and February 2017. Anyone interested in becoming a Mock Trial District Representative should contact Mock Trial Committee Chair Kristen Corn for more information.
