Warrant Sworn Against Rep. Daniel by GOP Primary Challenger

The challenger in the 18th District's GOP primary on Wednesday swore a warrant charging his opponent with assault, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports. The warrant filed by Steve Hall comes after he and incumbent Rep. Martin Daniel were involved in a shoving match during a live radio forum last week. Daniel’s lawyer said the warrant comes as a surprise, as Daniel previously apologized for the incident.

Trailblazing Okla. Senator, Vandy Law Grad Passes Away

Former Oklahoma state senator and graduate of the first Vanderbilt Law class to include African-Americans, E. Melvin Porter, died on Tuesday at the age of 86. Porter was elected to the Oklahoma senate in 1964 as the first black senator in the state. He served for 22 years, during which he introduced the Anti-Discrimination Act. News station KFOR-TV has more.

New Patent Pro Bono Program Begins Matching Attorneys

The Legal Assistance Volunteers for Patent Applicants (LAVPA) program has begun matching attorneys with inventors to assist in completing patent applications. Online applications from inventors are being received, and attorney volunteers are signing up, through online forms found on the TBA.org website.

Future volunteer recruiting and events are planned for Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis. Volunteer attorneys are in demand and vital to the success of the program. Volunteers Needed for Nashville Expungement Clinic

Following the Diversity Leadership Institute and Young Lawyer Division’s involvement with a very successful expungement clinic in Nashville, General Sessions Judge Rachel Bell is again seeking volunteers for a similar event on August 6. The clinic will take place that the New Covenant Christian Church in Nashville from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. June’s clinic served more than 100 clients, so TBA members are encouraged to spread the word and volunteer. Anyone interested should contact YLD Diversity Committee Chair Amber Floyd.

Wilson County Man Fights for Exoneration

A man who served 31 years for a crime he did not commit has hired attorneys to help continue his fight for exoneration. The Tennessean reports Lawrence McKinney, 60, was found guilty of rape in 1978, but was released in 2009 after DNA evidence cleared him of the crime. McKinney’s record has been since expunged, but he has not been exonerated, though he applied once shortly after his release. The Tennessee Board of Parole recently informed McKinney and his attorneys, David Raybin and Jack Lowery, that it was considering a hearing.

Mikva's Son-in-Law a Different Cohen

An item in Wednesday's issue of TBA Today incorrectly identified the son-in-law of Abner Mikva as U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. Mikva's son-in-law is named Steven Cohen, but he is not the Congressman from Memphis.

U.S. Jobs Up Overall, Only Modest Growth for Legal Sector

While job growth is up across the U.S., employment in the legal sector has remained mostly flat, gaining only about 100 jobs in the month of June, according to U.S. Department of Labor data reported by the American Lawyer. Following industry gains in 2015, this year’s legal jobs numbers have fluctuated, seeing a few large firms resort to layoffs. However, in a survey of large law firm leaders released on Thursday, nearly two-thirds of respondents said that they expected to grow their associate ranks in the near future.

Trump Taps Blackburn for RNC Convention Speech

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., will take the stage to speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this month, reports the Tennessean. Blackburn was selected by presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, and has referred to herself as a "very unlikely candidate" for Trump's vice president pick. Gov. Bill Haslam, Sen. Lamar Alexander and Sen. Bob Corker, considered a VP candidate himself prior to removing himself from contention earlier this week, will also attend the convention.

ABA: Safety of Society Relies on Rule of Law

Following police-involved shootings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana., and St. Paul, Minnesota., as well as the killing of five police officers in Dallas, ABA President Paulette Brown issued a statement, saying that "Our civil society and the safety of all in it – citizens and law enforcement – rely on the rule of law. It is imperative that the law be fairly applied and enforced. All citizens must perceive our justice system as fair. It also is essential that laws and authority are respected and followed." Brown writes that the ABA is "urgently exploring opportunities to develop creative solutions to this problem that affects us all… The ABA calls on all lawyers to work quickly and collaboratively toward viable and just answers to these issues.” Related, police officers in Nashville and Memphis were disciplined this week for what were deemed inappropriate social media posts about the shootings, the Tennessean reports.

Retirement Reception for Thurman July 27

A retirement ceremony for Tom Thurman, deputy district attorney general for the 20th District of Tennessee, will be July 27 at 4 p.m. at the Washington Square Building, located at 222 2nd Ave N., in Nashville. NewsChannel 5 has a profile on Thurman, who most recently served as prosecutor in the Brandon Vandenburg trial, and whose 39-year career also included the prosecution of accused murderer Perry March.
