Justice Dept. Begins Investigation into Sterling Shooting

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge, Louisiana., police, reports The New York Times. The incident was captured on video and shared widely on social media, prompting protests over the police killing of an African-American man. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards promised a thorough investigation. “I have very serious concerns,” Edwards said. “The video is disturbing, to say the least.”

YLD Invited Guest News for June 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – Join ETLAW Wednesday, July 20, 12 – 1:30 p.m. at the downtown Knoxville YWCA for ETLAW’s Monthly Meeting. For the 8th year, ETLAW will have a team for the Knoxville Race for the Cure. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 22. Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (TLAW) – TLAW recently held its Annual Meeting and Breakfast on June 17 in Nashville. TLAW is currently seeking committee members and chairs for committees. The CLE Committee is seeking a chair which is responsible for organizing continuing legal education courses, preparing the evaluations, and submitting CLE forms for credit to the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education. Generally, there are at least two CLEs during the year in addition to the TLAW Convention. The Annual Meeting Committee is seeking a chair which is responsible for organizing the annual TLAW meeting held during the convention in June each year. The committee arranges the TLAW breakfast, coordinates events, prepares and invites the judiciary and other dignitaries, and assists with arranging gifts for speakers. The committee is also responsible for the annual meeting budget and arranging sponsorships for the annual meeting. The Standing committees are also seeking committee members. Blount County Bar Association YLD – The Blount County Bar YLD recently held its monthly meeting elected new officers for the year.  The group’s new President is Stephanie Jernigan, Vice-President/Secretary is John Chavis, and the Hand of the President/Immediate Past President is Nick Black. Chattanooga Bar Association YLD – The Chattanooga Bar Association YLD continues to have monthly social happy hours and quarterly Coffee Talks with local judges throughout this upcoming year. The first Grandparents as Parents Legal Clinic, led by Deb House of Legal Aid of East Tennessee, was a success with many Barristers volunteering. Tentatively, the goal is to hold this clinic four times a year with support from Barrister’s volunteers.

Memphis Bar Association YLD –  The Memphis YLD has had a busy spring, including our annual high school mock trial tournament, lawyer’s basketball league and some fantastic CLE’s (including a strong panel discussion of Netflix’s “Making A Murderer”). Shifting gears to the summer calendar, the MBA YLD is working on some exciting events. The YLD will be enjoying "YLD Night at the Levitt Shell," where YLD members and family can spread out blankets, have some beer and enjoy the free summer concert series on July 16.
 
The MBA YLD will also be partnering with the Memphis Area Legal Services’ Young Lawyers Committee for the Campaign for Justice to host a charity bowling night at Billy Hardwick in Memphis on July 28.

YLD Holds Annual Meeting, Mancl Assumes Office at TBA Convention

YLD President-Elect Rachel Mancl took over the office of President at the annual TBA Convention, during which she was passed the official gavel of the presidency and held her second round of board meetings on June 18. Her first meetings were held during the YLD's spring planning session in April.

The YLD held its annual meeting on June 17, which all young lawyer members of the TBA were invited to attend. At the meeting, offices that were pending appointment were approved by those present. Then-President Rachel Moses presided over the meeting, which also featured a vote over a proposed bylaw amendedment. The amendment, which would allow changes to the way bylaws can be amended in the future, passed.

In addition to Mancl taking office as President, Ahsaki Baptist assumed the office of President-Elect, Christian Barker officially became the Vice President and Josh Dougan took over as the new Secretary. Ashley Holliday will remain as Treasurer for another year, and Moses will move on to be the Immediate Past President.

TBA YLD Fellows Induct New Members

The TBA YLD Fellows held their annual meeting and inducted new members at the annual Fellows Dinner, held in conjunction with the TBA Convention. Bill Haltom was elected the new Treasurer, and Lisa Richter will move to take office as the new President.

YLD, DLI Members Participate in Successful Clinic

On June 18, law students from the Diversity Leadership Institute took part in their annual public service project, which was to participate in an expungement clinic with Judge Rachel Bell in Madison. Members of the YLD board lended their hands to the effort as well. The clinic was an overhwhelming success, with DLI and YLD participants helping to serve more than 150 clients.
Judge Bell will be holding another expungement clinic on August 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Covenant Community Church in Nashville.  YLD members in the midstate area are encouraged to attend, and should contact Amber Floyd if they are interested.

YLD Announces Annual Award Recipients

The TBA Young Lawyers Division held its annual board dinner in conjunction with the TBA Convention on June 17, at the Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville.
 
Rachel Moses was on hand for her last task as TBA YLD President, which was to give out some well-deserved awards. Those included the Stars of the Quarter for the third and fourth quarters of the bar year. Recipients included Kristen Corn, Alex McVeagh, Will Hicky, Troy Weston, Ariel Anthony, Alicia Teubert and Judd Taback for the third quarter, and Bryce McKenzie, Holly Mancl, Ashley Holliday, Ben Conley, Lauren Curry, and Cherrelle Hooper for the fourth.
 
The Public Service Project Award went to Cole Rogers, for his successful clinic at the Madison Public Library during the YLD’s Access to Justice Legal Clinic Initiative. The President’s Special Recognition Award went to Christian Barker for exceptional service as Public Service Chair, Middle Tennessee Governor and Publications Committee Liaison during the 2015-2016 Bar Year. 
 
The President’s Award went to Amber Floyd and John Rice in recognition and grateful appreciation for tireless dedication to the improvement of the legal profession by promoting diversity and inclusion through the Diversity Committee.

Final Indigent Representation Task Force Meeting Approaching

On Friday, July 29 at the Nashville School of Law, the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Indigent Representation Task Force will have its final meeting on its statewide listening tour starting at 8:30 a.m. CT.

New Attorneys Sworn In June 14

Of the 193 attorneys who passed the Tennessee bar in February, 61 were sworn in during a ceremony on June 14 in Nashville. Then-TBA President Bill Harbison was on hand to help swear them in. As with the fall 2015 ceremony, new admitees were asked to take a photo and post it to social media using the hashtag #newTNattorney.
 
Following the ceremony, many new admittees and their guests proceeded to the Bar Center for a reception, during which they could mingle with TBA volunteers from the Young Lawyers Division.
 
 

TBA Sponsors Annual Lipscomb Law Camp

The TBA partnered with Lipscomb University for its annual Law Camp for high school students, held in Nashville June 6-10. Law firm Bradley Arant Boult Cummings also sponsored the program. Events included a tour of the Tennessee Supreme Court, lunch at the Tennessee Bar Center and a panel with local attorneys. The week concluded with a Recognition Luncheon for program staff and volunteers, participants and their families. Photos are available on the TBA website.
