TBA YLD Diversity Committee Nets ABA Award

The Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division was recognized nationally at the American Bar Association Spring Conference in St. Louis. The group received third place in the 2016 Embracing Diversity Challenge, awarded for the TBA YLD's work on the Diversity Leadership Institute. 

The DLI is a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students, designed to develop skills to succeed as an attorney and to build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. The recognition also included a cash prize of $250.

YLD Invited Guest News for April 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) –AWA recently held a successful Incarcerated Civil Law Legal Clinic in Memphis.  The group will be having the Mary Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament to carry on the philanthropic legacy of one of its strongest members, Mary Wolff, who passed away on Christmas Eve 2015 after a battle with cancer. The Mary Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016, at The Links at Galloway (lunch served at noon, shotgun start at 1 p.m., four person scramble). The proceeds will benefit three charitable organizations: The First Tee of Memphis; The AWA Foundation Scholarship Fund; and the Women’s Foundation of Greater Memphis.  To register or for more information about this great event please contact Mary-Morgan Whitfield at 901.277.8120 or visit the website.

East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – On Wednesday, April 20, ETLAW held its regular monthly meeting at the LMU Duncan School of Law.  Chancellor Elizabeth Asbury spoke on how female attorneys should present themselves in court to ensure maximum success for themselves and their clients.  Her presentation included specific advice about how to handle going to a new court that is out of one’s comfort zone and how to figure out who to talk to and what to do in each new court or county.
 
The next regular monthly meeting of ETLAW will be May 18, 2016 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. at the downtown Knoxville YWCA. Lunch will be available at a cost of $10. Register at the website.

American Bar Association YLD – ABA President Paulette Brown is in Nashville today visiting with the local Boys & Girls Club. Recognize your affiliate’s service to the bar and to the public in Awards of Achievement. Applications are due June 15.

This year’s Barristers Professional Clothing Drive in April was a smashing success, thanks to innumerable generous donors and the many hardworking volunteers who helped make the event possible.  Literally truckloads of clothing were donated to the YWCA, the Connect Ministries Career Closet, and Knox Area Rescue Ministries.  Thank you all for your support of this wonderful cause!

Second Annual Access to Justice Initiative Underway

The YLD's public service project for 2016, the Access to Justice Legal Clinic Initiative, is currently in progress, having begun in Cookeville on April 25. The project builds on the experience of last year's "Access to Justice Week."

Young lawyers are once again planning and participating in legal clinics across the state. The project is an initiative of YLD President Rachel Moses, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands, who has made pro bono service a key component of her platform for the year. Young lawyers are encouraged to volunteer for clinics in their area. Clinics will continue in various locations statewide until May 21.

This event takes a massive effort of YLD leaders and volunteers, working together to serve their community. Each clinic location is designed to aid an underserved area, and will require many volunteers. If you can help and make a difference in your region, check out the list of clinics and get in touch with your local YLD district representative to sign up today.

Volunteers Needed for Law Camp in Nashville

Law Camp for middle and high school students returns to Lipscomb University June 6-10 and the TBA will again be a partner in the effort. 

Based on the American Bar Association's Civics & Law Academy program, the camp will engage students in learning about law and society, helping to prepare them to be participants in our democratic socity. 

TBA staff and volunteers are working closely with Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice & Society to organize and deliver sessions throughout the week-long camp, held on the university's campus in Nashville. This annual event is designed to engage students using basic legal concepts and to expose them to various aspects of the legal profession. (See photos and read about last year's Law Camp on the TBA website.)
 
This year, Law Camp will focus on on the "Law and Justice" pathway. The TBA still needs volunteers for several sessions. If you are interested, contact Public Education Coordinator Katharine Heriges. Many of the materials, such as worksheets or Power Point presentations, have already been produced for these topics, so volunteers do not have to create all new resources.

YLD Elects Barker for Vice President

The Young Lawyers Division of the Tennessee Bar Association has elected a new vice president to serve for the 2016-2017 bar year. Christian Barker, of Barker Nashville PLLC, was voted the winner, and will go on to serve as the eventual president of the Young Lawyers Division during the 2018-2019 bar year.
Barker has been an active member of the TBA YLD board, serving as the division’s Public Service Committee Chair for the 2015-2016 bar year. His practice is in entertainment, copyright and trademark law.
 
For the first time, the election was held via electronic ballot, to make voting more accessible to all young lawyers in the TBA.
 
Barker's bio:
 
A future-oriented music industry professional possessing a comprehensive business and legal acumen, Christian Barker is a practicing attorney with Barker Nashville PLLC, the Nashville-based entertainment, copyright and trademark law firm he founded in 2012. 
 
"Empowered by strategic and deliberate planning rooted in the importance of developing strong interpersonal organizational relationships, I feel a calling to bring a more casual, goal-oriented, creative viewpoint to the next four years that will hopefully 1) drive increased TBA membership amongst young lawyers, 2) discover new ways to serve citizens of the state, and 3) bring a camaraderie to the division that will encourage networking and collaboration amongst young lawyers across the state so that we may rise in success in the profession together."
 
Affluent in the dynamics of using strengths-based leadership to influence and inspire, Christian has served the Young Lawyers Division as Mock Trial volunteer in 2012, Mock Trial Committee member in 2013 (writing the entertainment-related copyright infringement problem), vice chair of the Public Service Committee in 2014, and chair of the Public Service Committee in 2015. Throughout this experience, he's continued to excel at the maximization of existing infrastructure and balancing numerous project-based initiatives simultaneously.  
 
In addition to his main practice, Christian is also co-founder and current co-owner of three music industry start-ups: Capri Nashville, an artist management firm representing American Idol's Matt Giraud; Tour Solutions & Agency, a national talent agency for touring musicians; and the Surviving the Music Industry Podcast, which is set to begin nationwide distribution in May 2016. Outside of Nashville, Christian regularly provides court-appointed guardian ad litem and criminal defense representation to clients in rural Marshall County, Tennessee and serves as adjunct professor of Business Administration and Music Business at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee.

Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) – Tonight the AWA will be participating in MBA YLD Grizz Night as the Memphis Grizzles take on the Denver Nuggets.  AWA will be holding a Incarcerated Civil Law Legal Clinic on April 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Shelby County Jail East, 6201 Haley Road in Memphis. The group will provide civil law legal advice to those incarcerated who cannot afford legal fees on topics such as: veteran issues, divorce, custody, visitation, bankruptcy, foreclosure, landlord/tenant, employment, and others. East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – Leslie L. Beale, JD, the founder of and Success Coach at Profusion Strategies, recently presented Habits to Help You Thrive in the Practice of Law at ETLAW’s March monthly meeting.

ETLAW’s Supreme Court Luncheon that normally occurs in early May is being postponed due to scheduling issues but plans are being arranged to hold the events later this year with additional details to come.  For more information about the group, contact Alicia Teubert.

The Honorable Judge Curtis Collier was in attendance and expressed his full support in continuing to have an active chapter.
