Family of Waffle House Shooting Victim Sues Vanderbilt Medical Center

The mother of one of the victims in the deadly mass shooting at an Antioch Waffle House is suing Vanderbilt University Medical Center, saying two doctors there made errors that killed her son, the Tennessean reports. Victim Akilah DaSilva's autopsy lists his shooting wounds as the cause of death, but the latest lawsuit brought by his mother Shaundelle Brooks argues he was improperly treated after he was rushed to the Vanderbilt emergency room. The suit asks for up to $80,000,000 in damages.

Fayette County Lawyer Placed on Disability Inactive Status

By order of the Tennessee Supreme Court entered August 21, the law license of Fayette County lawyer Drew Justin Canale Jr. was transferred to disability inactive status pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Canale cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

Conservative Commentator Steve Gill in Jail for Failure to Pay Child Support

Conservative commentator and radio host Steve Gill has been booked into the Williamson County Jail, following his failure to pay $170,000 in child support to his ex-wife, the Tennessean reports. His bond to leave jail is $170,000, the same as the child support amount. Under Williamson County Judge James Martin's order, Gill will remain in jail until he pays the money he owes to his ex-wife.

Juvenile Judges Awarded at Annual Conference

A number of Tennessee judges received awards recently at the joint Tennessee Council of Juvenile Judges/Tennessee Juvenile Court Services Association Conference in Franklin. The organization's Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Montgomery County General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge Wayne C. Shelton. This year’s McCain-Abernathy Award went to Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge Robert D. Philyaw. The Tennessee Juvenile Court Services Association's Leadership Award was presented to Williamson County Juvenile Court Judge Sharon E. Guffee. Finally, the "You Inspire Us All" Award went to former Williamson County Juvenile Court Judge and current Magistrate Jane C. Franks.

House Minority Leader to Back Resolution Denouncing White Nationalism

With a special session of the legislature three days away, House Minority Leader Karen Camper, D-Memphis, says the timing is right for a resolution condemning neo-Nazis and white nationalists, the Daily Memphian reports. Camper said she will support a resolution by Rep. John Ray Clemmons, D-Nashville, calling out 37 white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups. The measure urges law enforcement to recognize them as terrorist organizations and go after their criminal elements with the “same fervor” they would other terrorist groups to protect the country. Clemmons’ resolution failed in a subcommittee in 2018 after failing to receive enough support to open discussion.

Nashville Conflict Resolution Center 20th Anniversary, Oct. 23

Shelby County Lawyer Suspended

The Supreme Court of Tennessee today temporarily suspended Shelby County lawyer Thomas Francis Jackson III from the practice of law upon finding that Jackson failed to comply with a Supreme Court order entered on May 3. Jackson is immediately precluded from accepting any new cases, and he must cease representing existing clients by Sept. 20. After that date, Jackson shall not use any indicia of lawyer, legal assistant or law clerk nor maintain a presence where the practice of law is conducted.
