Chattanooga Bar Association YLD – The Chattanooga Bar Association YLD continues to have monthly social happy hours with the next one scheduled for April 20 at Feed Co. Knoxville Bar Association Barristers – The Barristers have a number of events and activities planned for the upcoming year:

Please submit your nominations for the  KBA Law & Liberty Award to Courtney Read or Ashley Morgan.  We are seeking nominees who are visible to the profession and local bar, works to advance understanding of the law in the greater community, sets an example of good citizenship, donates time for volunteer work, sets high professional standards, and achieves professional goals even in the face of adversity.  The award will be presented on May 6 at KBA Law Day.

 The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast is a recurring event on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:15 a.m. The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast Committee always need volunteers to serve food or sponsor. The cost is $150 for sponsoring, and we need 4-5 volunteers. If you are unable to fund the breakfast, the Barristers will subsidize the cost of the breakfast. Volunteers meet at 6:15 a.m. and serve breakfast to approximately 30-40 individuals, generally leaving the site around 7:30 a.m. It’s a great way to serve the community. This is a great chance to partner with members of your firm, or law school classmates or friends or use it as an opportunity to involve staff in your office too. Sign up here. 

Spring Cleaning? Make room in your closet and help others at the same time! Barristers Hunger & Poverty Relief Committee is collecting professional clothes April 4-18. Items needed are slacks, skirts, suits, blouses, shirts, dresses, ties and dress shoes. Multiple donation locations will be available including Gay Street, Main Street, law schools and West Knoxville. Please do not donate clothes with holes, stains or rips. Women's clothing will be donated to the YWCA and Connect Ministries Career Closet.  Men's Clothing will be donated to Knox Area Rescue Ministries. Memphis Bar Association YLD –  The Memphis Bar Association YLD will recently hosted a successful panel discussion on the Steven Avery documentary Making a Murderer.  This year’s “YLD Grizz Night” is tonight (March 30). Still Time to Register for ABA Spring Conference

The American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division annual Spring Conference is approaching quickly. There is still time to register prior to the conference, which will be held in St. Louis, Mo. next week.

Tennessee young lawyers in attendence will get a chance to earn CLE credit, network with attorneys from across the country and enjoy special events and dinners. Current ABA members receive a discounted price at registration, but non-ABA members are also welcome to attend.

Young Lawyers Talk Public Education at TCSS

Young Lawyers Division President Rachel Moses and YLD Public Service Committee Chair Christian Barker attended the Tennessee Conference for the Social Studies (TCSS) on March 11 to discuss the civics resources offered by the Tennessee Bar Association. Held at the Cool Springs Marriot in Franklin, the day-long conference served as a venue for teachers to interact with providers of education tools. 

Currently, the TBA's Public Education programs aimed at school-aged children and young adults include the Civics and Law Academy, Civics Enrichment for Kids and the GAVELS Speakers Bureau, in which a teacher or institution can request a local attorney to visit the classroom and speak on an age-appropriote civics-related topic.

Mock Trial Tournament Crowns New State Champs

Montgomery Bell Academy emerged as the winner of the 2016 State High School Mock Trial Competition in Nashville.

(NASHVILLE, March 19, 2016) — MBA defeated the Chattanooga Southeast Tennessee Home Education Association team in the championship round. MBA will go on to represent Tennessee at the National High School Mock Trial Competition May 12-14 in Boise, Idaho.

The two-day state competition, sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, involved 16 teams and nearly 200 volunteers, including lawyers, law students and paralegals. In addition, sitting judges in the state presided over the trial rounds at the Metro Davidson County Courthouse in downtown Nashville. Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee presided over the championship match Saturday evening.

Additionally, Home Life Academy claimed the team Sportsmanship Award during their first-ever appearance in the competition. 

Congratulations to Mock Trial Committee Chair Kristen Corn, Vice Chair Rob Sands and the YLD Mock Trial Committee on another successful year hosting the tournament.

YLD CLE for April: Making the Most of Discovery

Members of the Young Lawyers Division Board's CLE committee have helped spearhead a new CLE for April entitled "Making the Most of Discovery: What You Don't Know Can Come Back to Haunt You."

Two programs are currently scheduled - one in Nashville, produced by YLD CLE Committee Chair Nina Kumar, and one in Knoxville, produced by YLD CLE East Tennessee Captain Alyssa Minge.

This program covers many levels of written discovery and e-discovery. Presenters will cover best practices, effective use of subpoenas, enforcement and dealing with difficult counsel. A session on social media discovery will help you with Internet searches. Discussion on alternatives to written discovery will include site inspection, deposition by interrogatories, and physical exam versus independent medical exams. Also included will be discussion on using criminal records in civil discovery, and Rule 30 (b)(6) depositions and tactics.

Voting for YLD Elections Ends This Week

This is a reminder to all young lawyer members of the Tennessee Bar Association to vote in the ongoing YLD election, which will end at precisely 12 a.m. Central, 1 a.m. Eastern on April 2. 

This year, the YLD will hold one contested election, which will be for the office of vice president. The vice president will go on to lead the YLD as president in the 2018-2019 bar year. Votes are counted by electronic ballot, available to all young lawyer members via a link sent to them by email.

Affluent in the dynamics of using strengths-based leadership to influence and inspire, Christian has served the Young Lawyers Division as Mock Trial volunteer in 2012, Mock Trial Committee member in 2013 (writing the entertainment-related copyright infringement problem), vice chair of the Public Service Committee in 2014, and chair of the Public Service Committee in 2015. Throughout this experience, he's continued to excel at the maximization of existing infrastructure and balancing numerous project-based initiatives simultaneously.  
 
In addition to his main practice, Christian is also co-founder and current co-owner of three music industry start-ups: Capri Nashville, an artist management firm representing American Idol's Matt Giraud; Tour Solutions & Agency, a national talent agency for touring musicians; and the Surviving the Music Industry Podcast, which is set to begin nationwide distribution in May 2016. MBA Claims 2016 Mock Trial Title

(NASHVILLE, March 19, 2016) — Montgomery Bell Academy emerged as the winner of the 2016 State High School Mock Trial Competition in Nashville this weekend. MBA defeated the Chattanooga Southeast Tennessee Home Education Association team in the championship round. MBA will go on to represent Tennessee at the National High School Mock Trial Competition May 12-14 in Boise, Idaho.

Speak Out for the TBA Indigent Representation Task Force

The 109th General Assembly is winding down and expected to adjourn sine die before the end of April after the passage of Governor Haslam’s budget. Even though the legislative session is ending do not forget to make your voice heard to "Increase the Rate for Indigent Representation”! The  Indigent Representation Task Force will be coming to a town near you this summer and fall.

YLD Invited Guest News for February 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (ETLAW) – On Feb. 17, ETLAW in collaboration with TLAW, the University of Tennessee College of Law and the UT Law student organization, Law Women, hosted a very informative discussion on constitutional, family and privacy law implications of the anti-vaccination movement and the criminal, family, and privacy law implications involved with Tennessee’s fetal drug law to a packed room at the University of Tennessee. 
 
ETLAW’s March monthly meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 16, at noon at the YWCA in downtown Knoxville (420 Clinch Avenue). Leslie L. Beale, JD, the founder of and Success Coach at Profusion Strategies, will be presenting Habits to Help You Thrive in the Practice of Law.

The Law School Mentor Committee recently conducted mock interviews at the UT College Law. The Barristers Hunger and Poverty Relief Committee have been selling “Teddygram” e-cards to purchase teddy bears to donate to the Knoxville Police Department, whose officers provide the bears to children in crisis.  Volunteers are also needed for a Solo/Small Firm Panel at UT Law in March. The Barristers will volunteer for Mobile Meals (the Knoxville chapter of Meals on Wheels) delivering meals to seniors the first Tuesday of every month.
