TBA YLD Names 2nd Quarter ‘Stars of the Quarter’ for 15-16

Young Lawyers Division (YLD) president Rachel Moses named three new “Stars of the Quarter” for the 2015-2016 bar year’s second quarter. Each winner would have been recognized at the Mid-Winter Board Dinner on Jan. 22; however, the dinner was canceled due to winter storms.
 
The first honoree was Christian Barker of Barker Nashville PLLC, who was recognized for creating and distributing a specialized graphic that was used at Wills for Heroes clinics across the state. 
 
Marisa Combs of Lewis Thomason's Nashville office was recognized for spearheading the “Selfie Challenge,” which harnessed social media to promote membership among new attorneys. 
 
Lauren Curry of Sherrard and Roe in Nashville was the final recipient, honored for her work as District 11 Representative to the YLD Board. Curry led a particularly well-attended Wills for Heroes clinic, which served 44 first responders in Williamson County.

Diversity Leadership Institute Holds First, Abbreviated Session

Despite a weekend of terrible weather, the Diversity Leadership Institute held its opening session during the annual TBA Leadership Conference, Jan. 22-23. Amidst the snow, four students were able to attend in-person and the rest participated through conference call. Diversity Committee Chair Amber Floyd and Vice Chair John Rice lead the group in an abbreviated presentation on Friday, and the students who had made it into Nashville joined the Young Lawyers Division Board meeting on Saturday.
 
The Diversity Leadership Institute is a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students. Now in its sixth year, the program is designed to help students develop skills to succeed; empower students to contribute more to the legal community; match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas; and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds.

The awards given are the Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year, the Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year and the Law Student Volunteer of the Year. Know the Issues, Share Your Voice

Knowing what issues are being discussed among leadership is a vital part of being a member of the TBA. Many young lawyers have a unique take on current topics in the legal community, but too often don't voice their experiences and sometimes, don't even know the proper procedure to do so.
 
Young lawyers are currently serving throughout the TBA in leadership positions. For those looking to become more active in TBA's decision-making process, reaching out to the YLD members in the House of Delegates is a good place to start. Young lawyers currently serving in the House include:

2016 Diversity Leadership Institute Class Selected

The YLD Diversity Committee this month selected 19 law students for the 2016 Diversity Leadership Institute, a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students. Now in its sixth year, the program is designed to develop skills to succeed as a law student and attorney; empower students to contribute more to the legal community; match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas; and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. Offers to join the class are now pending with the students.
 
The 2015 Diversity Leadership Institute program will begin with an opening retreat Jan. 22-23 in Nashville. At the retreat, participants will learn the identity of their mentors, get to know fellow class members and be introduced to leadership and diversity concepts that will be explored throughout the program. During the six-month program, participants will be required to meet with their mentor at least twice, complete one community service activity, and attend two continuing legal education seminars, at least one of which must include a diversity component. The Institute will conclude with a final session and graduation ceremony during the TBA Annual Convention in Nashville in June.

2016 CASA Volunteer of the Year Named

The TBA YLD has selected April Herrington of College Grove as the 2016 CASA Volunteer of the Year. At its winter meeting in January, the YLD Board will present the award to Herrington and Kristin Parker, executive director of CASA of Maury County.

Herrington was a standout volunteer for CASA's Fostering Futures program, which focuses on the needs of older foster youth at risk of aging out of custody. This program is especially challenging because CASA's National team does not provide a training guide for older youth. Herrington pioneered CASA's "Life Boxes," which provide resources and needed supplies to help young adults. She spearheaded the program alongside the young person that was her first case assignment.

The Life Boxes were designed to be a way for young people to organize important documentation, such as birth certificates, medical records or resumes, needed to secure employment, housing and other necessities. Herrington visited local agenies and diligently researched online to collect information for inclusion, and continues to revise and refine the boxes to be as up to date and complete as possible.

Herrington developed strong relationships with the youth she mentored over her two years with CASA. Her first case assignment involved a young woman who did not trust Herrington, and initially resisted mentorship. However, Herrington did not give up, and continued to work with the girl until a relationship was formed. That young woman went on to help Herrington create the Life Boxes, and when the she aged out of custody, she requested to stay in contact with Herrington. This was not an isolated incident; later, another youth who found the Life Boxes to be very helpful ended up working with Herrington as well to improve the boxes for others.

Special thanks goes to all those who serve and those who nominated outstanding volunteers. Appreciation also goes to Knoxville lawyer Katrina Atchley Arbogast who chairs the YLD’s Children’s Issues Committee and the members of the award committee who reviewed all of the applications. YLD Invited Guest News for December 2015

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women – Each December, ETLAW collects toiletry items to donate to the residents of the YWCA Keys of Hope program. This year's Annual ETLAW Toiletry Drive was a success! ETLAW members were overwhelmingly responsive to the needs of the YWCA; ETLAW made 400 bags welcome bags for residents, filled with toiletry necessities, and members contributed over $800. With that money, ETLAW was also able to donate 18 pairs of gloves, 30+ pairs of socks, 12 USB drives, 14 packs of pens and pencils, 2 huge sets of Tupperware, 18 notebooks, and $200 worth of grocery gift cards.
 
ETLAW has elected its 2016 Board of Directors, including new president, Catherine Anglin of Paine Bickers and president-elect, Alyssa Minge. Crista Cuccaro was elected secretary and Heather Ferguson was elected treasurer. The new programming chair is Loretta Cravens, membership chair is Kati Goodner, historian is Stephanie Coleman, community outreach chair is Baily Bowers and corporate compliance chair is Alicia Teubert.  For more information about the group, contact Alicia Teubert, (865) 766-0056.

American Bar Association YLD – The ABA is currently accepting applications for leadership appointments for the 2016-2017 bar year. Race against Racism – The Diversity Committee plans to participate in the YWCA’s Annual Race against Racism on Jan. 16. Pre-race festival starts at 11 a.m. and the race begins at 1 p.m. Those interested in joining the team should contact Amanda Morse or Zack Gardner.
 
Law School Mock Interviews – The Law School Mentor Committee is looking for volunteers to conduct mock interviews Feb. 1-5 at the UT College Law. Contact Caitlyn Elam if you're interested in participating.

Finally, the group reports that its 2015 Canned Food Drive broke all previous records. Second Harvest also reported that the total raised is by far one of the highest food/fund drives by any professional organization. Category winners are:

YLD Wraps Up a Successful 2016 Ethics Series in Chattanooga

The Business of Lawyering: Professional Development for Today’s Attorney is a three-hour ethics seminar that focuses on the practical aspects of lawyering. YLD has offered seminars every Friday in February across the state and will be conducting its final program today, February 26, in Chattanooga. We look forward to seeing you there.

The YLD will again this year provide free wills and other end of life documents for first responders in Tennessee. The following clinics have been scheduled for the spring.
