Tennessee inmate Abu-Ali Abdur'Rahman will leave death row months before his scheduled execution because of a deal brokered by Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk, the Tennessean reports. Criminal Court Judge Monte Watkins approved the deal Friday, allowing Abdur'Rahman, 68, to spend the rest of his life in prison instead of being put to death on April 16. The move cements a dramatic win for Abdur'Rahman and his attorneys, who had long argued that the racial bias and misconduct of a "rogue prosecutor" had tainted his 1987 murder trial.

Scrutiny of the city's probation department intensified this week, with Mayor David Briley and a broad swath of the Metro Council demanding investigations into the department's cooperation with federal immigration agents seeking to deport immigrants in the country illegally, the Tennessean reports. Briley is calling for an investigation and performance audit of the General Sessions Probation Department following reports that the agency is sharing information on probationers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Briley is expected to sign an executive order that outlines what Metro departments and employees should do when contacted by ICE.

The University of Tennessee College of Law is welcoming two new faculty members this semester. Professor Sherley Cruz has joined the Legal Clinic faculty where she will lead students in the Advocacy Clinic. The Tennessee Supreme Court is considering amending Rule 12, Sections 1 and 2 of the Rules of the Tennessee Supreme Court and the First-Degree Murder Report which is appended to Rule 12. The court is seeking written comments on the proposals from judges, lawyers, interested organizations and the public. After testifying against her husband in a child support hearing last week, Steve Gill's current wife has filed a temporary order of protection against the political commentator and local radio host, the Tennessean reports. She says she hadn't been able to live in their Brentwood home since February, and had to live with friends, inside hotels or other houses while pet sitting. Saying she was "terrified," she detailed physical and psychological abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband, who is currently detained in Williamson County Jail for failing to pay child support to his previous wife. His current wife has also filed for divorce.

Former medical equipment company owner Brenda Montgomery has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for her participation in a $4.6 million Medicare kickback scheme alongside former Comprehensive Pain Specialists CEO John Davis, the Nashville Post reports. On top of the prison sentence, the District Court of Middle Tennessee ordered Montgomery to pay a fine of $30,000 as well as a mandatory $100 special assessment per count. She will forfeit nearly $596,000 for her role in the scheme. Her company, CCC Medical, is now closed.

The presiding judge of the Metro Nashville General Sessions Court is firing back on city leaders who have called for an investigation into the city's probation department in the wake of reports that its officers were working to assist federal immigration officials, the Tennessean reports. Judge Melissa Blackburn on Thursday afternoon cautioned the Metro Council against using the Probation Department as a "scapegoat," when probation officers were operating with the approval of Metro Legal. Recent reports show that probation director Robert Green and probation officers have provided Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with addresses and contact information on individuals.
