The TBA YLD hosted a virtual debt relief clinic in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee, TALS, the Knoxville Bar Association, the AOC’s Access to Justice Initiative, and federal Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne Bauknight. The clinic took place virtually on Saturday, March 13, and was open to residents of East Tennessee. Low income debtors met with attorney volunteers on Zoom and received advice regarding bankruptcy and other debt collection matters. If bankruptcy proceedings were determined to be needed, attorney volunteers agreed to take those cases pro bono. The clinic had a strong showing, with 15 attorneys volunteering their time. Law students taking a bankruptcy class at LMU also attended the clinic and sat in on the advice sessions. The YLD is working on planning another debt clinic this summer and hops to expand the clinic across the state.

During March, LAW issued several public statements in response to events and activity in the state. At the end of February, a group of state House representatives introduced a resolution, HR23, seeking to remove Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle from the bench due to a disagreement with her ruling over absentee voting in 2020. LAW members and leaders quickly put out a statement in support of Chancellor Lyle. Additionally, LAW filed a letter with the Tennessee Supreme Court in support of the Nashville Bar Association's petition to modify Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 21 to require Tennessee attorneys to attend two hours of CLE annually on diversity, inclusion, equity and elimination of bias. The letter can be found in the March issue of LAW Matters.

On April 8, LAW's Health and Wellness Committee hosted a virtual book club. Everyone was reading "Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything," by BJ Fogg.

On April 22, at 5 p.m. CDT, LAW is hosting its Annual Meeting and 40th Anniversary Celebration. More details are available online.

On April 27 at 5 p.m. CDT, LAW will host a quarterly "Lean In Circle" event.

LAW is now accepting applications from members to join LAW's 2021-2022 Board. LAW's fiscal year runs from May 1 through April 30. The election will take place at the Annual Meeting on April 22. Applications for executive board positions and committee co-chair positions can be obtained by emailing info@law-nashville.org.

What does it mean to be an adult in Tennessee? From the right to vote to entering into a lease for that first apartment to serving on a jury, young people are faced with a world of new rights, responsibilities and obligations when they turn 18. To help them navigate this new world, the Tennessee Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division has launched #JustAdultingTN, a new online resource packed with information on everything from marriage and paternity issues to drinking laws and social media responsibility.

The website is now live.
