The Tennessee Bar Association’s Public Education Committee and Elder Law Section recently teamed-up to participate in a statewide initiative to offer screenings of Nashville Public Television's (NPT) Aging Matters legal help documentary.

Aging Matters provides information on resources available to seniors in the state and identifies where to turn when legal help is needed. The goal is 36 screenings across the state, 12 in each grand division. All screenings are free to attend for seniors and a lawyer will be present for any follow-up questions. All screening materials are provided by NPT. If you would like to host an Aging Matters screening in your area, please contact JoAnn Scalf at NPT.

The YLD is hosting a virtual legal clinic on Oct. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Belmont University College of Law in Nashville. The clinic is held in partnership with Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services and Belmont’s Legal Aid Society. During the clinic, attorney volunteers will be paired with a small group of law students to answer legal questions submitted by low income Tennesseans on TN Free Legal Answers. The law firm of Martin Heller Potempa & Sheppard is graciously sponsoring the event and will provide refreshments for the volunteers. This clinic is a great way to mentor and show law students the value of YLD involvement and to increase access to justice for vulnerable people in our community.

Attorney volunteers should sign up for TN Free Legal Answers at least 24 hours prior to the clinic. Please email Alix Rogers to sign up and for more registration instructions.

Héctor García

Héctor García was born on Jan. 17, 1914, in Llera, Mexico. He was one of seven children, and when he was four years old, his family moved to Mercedes, Texas. The family helped run a dry goods store in town. García graduated valedictorian of his high school class and with honors from the University of Texas. Four years after completing his undergraduate studies, García graduated with his M.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Medicine at Galveston. In 1942, García joined the army and served during World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service on the battlefields of North Africa and Italy.

After serving in World War II, García returned to Texas and opened a medical practice in Corpus Christi. He primarily treated Hispanic veterans who had been denied medical treatment. Because of the intolerable discrimination that he witnessed, García founded the American GI Forum within two years of returning from war. Due in part to the Longoria Incident, the GI Forum became a national organization by 1954. After Private Felix Longoria was killed in combat in the Philippines and the owner of the only mortuary in town would not allow a Mexican American to have chapel services, García led the struggle to bring attention to the issue. Then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson received a telegram from García about the injustice and offered to have Private Longoria buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, which the family accepted. In 1984, President Reagan awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Throughout his career, García fought for the civil rights of Hispanic Americans.
