Earlier this month the Chattanooga Legal Diversity Consortium, along with the NBA S.L. Hutchins and TBA YLD, hosted the 3rd Annual Chattanooga Leadership and Law Academy. The Leadership and Law Academy is a two-day program designed to introduce local minority high school students from the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades to the practice of law.  Here are some pictures from this year’s successful program.

It’s that time of year again! Below are the dates and locations for the four admission ceremonies that will take place in November. The TBA will again have membership tables at each location and we need local YLDer’s to help staff the tables.

10:00 a.m. - Admission Ceremony

November 6, 2018 - Nashville Music City Center (Rooms 207A-D and Room 208A - Robing)
10:00 a.m. - Admission Ceremony
1:00 p.m. - Admission Ceremony

November 7, 2018 - Jackson Supreme Court Building
8:30 a.m. - Admission Ceremony
9:00 a.m. - Oral Arguments

November 8, 2018 - Memphis City Hall — Council Chambers (1st Floor)

Also, the TBA Nashville Open House will be held at the Music City Center (our convention center) this year with only one reception being held in middle of the two ceremonies. Since there will only be one Open House on site, there will be a bigger crowd. Send the names of the volunteers to YLD Coordinator, Stephanie Vonnahme. Let me know if you have any questions. I appreciate your help in advance!

Earlier this month a harem of attorneys and volunteers in Chattanooga gave their time and support to make another TBA and Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition family defense workshop a success. During the workshop, 18 families from the local immigrant community were assisted with preparing family plans and power of attorneys. Thanks to everyone who made this event a success!

TBA YLD Board Member, Todd B. Skelton, currently serves as deputy counsel to Governor Bill Haslam, where he is a member of the governor’s senior staff. The role encompasses many different areas, as Todd advises the governor on judicial selection, legislation, executive clemency, and various other complex state and federal law issues. In addition to working with 23 executive branch agencies and the Office of the Attorney General, Todd is the governor’s representative on the Tennessee Housing Development Agency Board of Directors, Tennessee Interagency Council on Homelessness, and State Building Commission staff. He led teams responsible for successful passage of the Juvenile Justice Reform Act of 2018 and 2017 legislation regarding state action antitrust immunity pursuant to the NC Dental U.S. Supreme Court decision.

Prior to joining the Haslam Administration in early 2015, he was an associate attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, P.C., where he practiced in the areas of securities law, corporate governance, and mergers and acquisitions.

Todd is all Vol, as he earned his undergraduate, law, and MBA degrees from the University of Tennessee. During his tenure at UT, Todd was a Torchbearer Award recipient, elected Graduate Student Senate President, and was a Symposium & Student Materials Editor for the Tennessee Law Review.

Community engagement is important to Todd. In addition to being part of Class VI of Leadership Tennessee, he is a mentor for tnAchieves and serves on the UT College of Law's Alumni Council and UT Haslam College of Business Young Alumni Board.

When he’s not in the office, you’ll likely find him running the trails of Percy Warner or Bells Bend parks in Nashville. As though the hills of Tennessee weren’t enough, Todd was a member of the U.S. Junior Men's Team that competed at the 2004 World Mountain Running Championships in Italy.

He and his wife, Kim, love trying new restaurants around Nashville and are expecting their first child in November. (It’s a boy!). Congratulations Todd on all that you have accomplished and on being the October 2018 Tennessee Young Lawyer Spotlight!
