TBA’s Young Lawyer Division is excited to partner with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands as it unfolds a new format for the State’s Wills for Heroes program. TBA’s Wills for Heroes is implementing an online platform this year, instead of the Saturday clinic format. Volunteer attorneys will now have an opportunity to meet with a first responder at a time that is convenient for both attorney and first responder, while still accruing pro-bono CLE credit. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Erica Marino at willsforheroesondemand@tnbar.org or (931)455-9301.

This is a new section dedicated to recognize YLD members that have gone over-and-beyond recently in their community. YLD is proud of you.
  • TBA YLD Board Member Sean Aiello was elected Williamson County District 11 County Commissioner on Aug. 2.
  • TBA YLD Board Member Todd Skelton is a member of the newest Leadership Tennessee class.

Congrats to both of you on your latest accomplishment! If you have any other accolades that we may have missed, please send those to Logan Threadgill

This past Saturday in Nashville the TBA YLD and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition put on another successful family defense workshop.  The young lawyer volunteers that staffed the workshop graciously provided free legal assistance to numerous members of the immigrant community in middle Tennessee.

Interested in broadening your understanding of expungement law?  Well, here’s your chance to do just that while, at the same time, pick up an hour of CLE credit.  On August 30th, the KBA Solo Practitioner/Small Firm Section will be presenting a seminar entitled “A Clean Slate: Expungement Law for the Non-Criminal Lawyer.”

The seminar will be presented by Joy Radice, the director of UT College of Law’s clinic programs, and Troy Weston, the TBA YLD president-elect.  More on the KBA expungement law seminar can be found here

Boudin, crawfish, hurricanes and CLEs—what else could a young lawyer ask for?  The inaugural Tennessee Young Lawyers Conference will be held on October 5 and 6, at the Crown Plaza Hotel located in the heart of New Orleans’ famous French Quarter.

In conjunction with the Conference—which will offer educational programs and up to 8 hours of CLE credits—you will have the opportunity to mingle with fellow Tennessee lawyers and the leadership of the TBA YLD during the cornucopia of receptions, dinners, and social events offered during the weekend long conference!  To learn more about the 2018 YLD Conference, click here

The American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting recently took place from August 2 – 4 in Chicago.  Several members of the TBA YLD (and newly trained deep-dish pizza food critics) proudly represented the Volunteer State at the annual meeting.

From left to right:  John Rice, Allyson Lumpkin, Troy Weston, Debbie Zimmerlee Boudreaux, and Todd Skelton

The Tennessee YLD delegation served us well by attending the ABA YLD Assembly and voting on resolutions that will shape the future of our profession.  Key resolutions included admitting Puerto Rico to the YLD Assembly; encouraging courts, bar associations, prosecutors, and public defenders to analyze and share existing data about alternatives to criminal prosecution and arraignment; and endorsement of the report entitled A Way Forward:  Transparency in 2018, which calls for young attorney representation in the law accreditation process.  More information on the resolutions presented can be found here.

Troy Weston, the young lawyer delegate to the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates, represented young lawyers across Tennessee in the House, which convened on Monday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 7. The House considered a myriad of resolutions over its two-day convocation, including measures to make the model rules governing lawyer advertising more uniform, a unanimous adoption of a resolution urging Louisiana and Oregon to require unanimous jury verdicts in felony cases, and a resolution urging Congress to enact immigration reform addressing children separated from their families. The House also heard remarks from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
