A new electronic filing system was enacted earlier this month for the Tennessee Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. It’s easy to set up. All you have to do to register is go here, input your contact information, the state in which you’re licensed, and enter your bar number.

Earlier this month the TBA YLD held a successful family defense workshop in Knoxville. Pro bono attorneys at the workshop offered family preparation plans and powers of attorney to the immigrant community in the Knoxville area. Thanks to the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and TBA YLD, the workshop had a tremendous turnout.

Shout out to the Music City!  On July 21, attorneys from all over Middle Tennessee came out to the Goodwill Career Solutions Center in Nashville to volunteer their time for the Music City Community Courts Expungement Clinic. The expungement clinic was a huge success, as over 100 local participants were provided with free legal service. To learn about upcoming clinics and volunteer, please contact Amber Floyd.

Allyson Lumpkin, an associate attorney at Baker Donelson’s Chattanooga office and TBA YLD board member, was the focus of an article in this month’s Hamilton County Herald. More on Allyson — the Baker Donelson 2018 Associate of the year award recipient — can be found on the newspaper's website.

Last month at the TBA Annual Convention in Memphis, attorney Ahsaki Baptist officially was able to drop the proverbial microphone as the 2017 president of the TBA Young Lawyers Division (and yes, she did in fact drop the mic at the conclusion of her farewell speech to the TBA YLD Board). Well, we’re not quite done with you yet, Ahsaki.

Currently a FedEx Express senior attorney, Ahsaki Baptist is the focal point of this month’s Tennessee Young Lawyer Spotlight. Prior to joining FedEx, Ahsaki was a partner at the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs LLP, during which time she garnered a wealth of experience in commercial litigation and real estate matters.

Despite the ever-present demands of billable hours, Ahsaki has always found a way to volunteer her time to the TBA YLD, and various legal service organizations and pro bono matters in the Memphis area. To be honest, it’s hard to even begin to rattle off all of the positions and boards Ahsaki has been a part of. In addition to her time as President and Vice President of the TBA YLD, Ahsaki has served on the TBA YLD Executive Committee and was inaugural Chair of the Diversity Committee and the Access to Justice Committee; she is a past member of the TBA YLD Board of Directors and she is an alumni of the TBA Leadership Law program. Ahsaki has devoted countless hours towards the successful growth and development of the TBA YLD and she truly has a servant’s heart.

Congratulations Ahsaki on all that you have accomplished and on being featured in the July 2018 Tennessee Young Lawyer Spotlight!

The TBA’s Young Lawyers Division recently implemented its 2018 Long Range Plan. The plan will serve as a guide for the YLD in developing and effectuating legal programs in conjunction with the division’s bylaws, mission statement, and diversity plan. Every five years, the YLD, through the Long Range Plan, reevaluates its goals and the tools it uses to implement its mission.

This year’s Plan, crafted under the intrepid leadership of Troy Weston, outlines seven goals that are of paramount importance to the YLD. Woven throughout this Plan is a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the profession and young lawyer well-being. Learn more about the 2018 Long Range Plan here.

The TBA YLD recognizes that new lawyers face many challenges in their first few years of practice. Whether it’s trying to figure out where to sit in the courtroom, how to check how many CLE hours you’ve earned, or needing someone to help connect you with one of the many resources offered by the TBA, the YLD has your back.

Ross Smith, the New Attorney Liaison, is here to help you adapt to the practice of law. Ross’ position was newly created this year, and reflects the YLD’s commitment to making new lawyers' transition in the practice of law seamless by connecting you with other lawyers in your area and answering practical questions about the practice. We can’t give legal advice or help you with your legal research, but for everything else, we’re here to help. And best of all, it’s free.

Get in touch with the New Attorney Liaison online or by calling (615) 952-1331.
