ABA YLD Spring 2020 Meeting In Nashville

In May 2020, the ABA YLD is going to host its spring meeting in Nashville in conjunction with the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice section meeting. Tera Rica Murdock will be serving as chair of the Host Committee for the meeting. The Host Committee is looking for people with a cross-section of practices interested in serving on the committee. Volunteers Needed to Help with FEMA Issues in American Samoa

Did you know American Samoa yields the highest rate of military enlistment of ANY U.S. State or Territory per capita? The ABA YLD Disaster Legal Services Team anticipates potentially three to four thousand appealable issues. There is only one legal aid agency on the island, and it is staffed with two full-time attorneys and one paralegal, which was operating near capacity prior to the disaster. The private bar is also very small, with less than a dozen private attorneys on the island who could take cases. Without your help, most of the people with FEMA issues in American Samoa will not have access to legal assistance.

If you're not sold on volunteering yet, here are some other points to consider: 
  • We have a coordinator stateside and a local paralegal in American Samoa to help manage the casework.
  • American Samoa is a few hours behind the states, (seven hours behind Eastern) so if you set aside some time in the afternoon/evening, you'll be corresponding during the normal workday in American Samoa.
  • Many of the Appeals are not complicated, and may only require a relatively straightforward response to FEMA.
  • Training/mentorship/templates are available. 
  • You don't need to have any prior experience in this area.

Spring Lawyer Admission and Swearing In Ceremony Set for Friday

A new set of Tennessee lawyers will be sworn in this Friday at the Polk Theater, Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville. Come congratulate and mingle with the group at the reception afterwards from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

#MeToo CLE is Tomorrow, June 1

Join us to participate in this discussion of how the #MeToo movement has impacted the legal world. We will hear about how employment and human resources issues are being reported and resolved, a panel discussion on the different perspectives arising from the social movement and finally the ethical implications of the Supreme Court model rule change on discrimination. This program promises to be a lively conversation on the current social and legal issues impacting the legal community from the #MeToo movement.

Volunteer Opportunity For Law Camp at Lipscomb University

Each summer, the TBA Public Education Committee works closely with David Lipscomb University to host a week-long law camp for high school students, exposing them to various aspects of the legal profession. This year’s camp is expected to have 30 students from across the state in attendance, where they will learn to participate in our democratic society by engaging in educational sessions led by knowledgeable, civically active adults — including lawyers, judges, teachers, youth workers and other leaders. The American Bar Association has developed lessons on many different topics that can be adapted to fit the needs of many different audiences and programs.

This year’s theme is ‘Power and Empowerment in Your Community.’ The camp will examine federalism and shared powers, separation of powers, ideals and realities of political power and checks and balances, offering relatable examples through our current political climate and social change movements. Our hopes are to encourage conversations amongst lawyers and students that relate to their demographic and Tennessee’s constitution. YLD Invited Guest News for April 2018

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as a funded but non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association.  See a list of all organizations invited to send representatives.
 
Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) –  The Association for Woman Attorneys (AWA) has some exciting events coming up. First, on May 9 the AWA is having a meeting on “Circuit Civil Procedure & Practice Tips” at the University of Memphis Law School from 12 to 1 p.m. Aldo's pizza, cookies, and soft drinks will be provided. On May 12, the AWA is sponsoring the MBA Access to Justice – Saturday Legal Clinic. As always, help is needed and pro bono hours will be given. 
 
Next, the annual "Mary Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament" will be held on June 1 at The Links at Galloway with a shotgun start of 1 p.m. There is a $100 entry fee which includes lunch, a t-shirt, a goody bag, a raffle entry and many chances to win prizes. This year's golf tournament will benefit the AWA Foundation and Girls Inc. YLD Affiliate News for April 2018

American Bar Association YLD – The 2018 ABA YLD Spring Conference will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, from May 10-12. Registration is available online now. 
 
Blount County Bar Association YLD – The Blount County YLD has a new president, Sarah Miracle, for the upcoming bar year. For more information email Sarah or call 865-705-7011.
 
Chattanooga Bar Association YLD – The Chattanooga Bar Association YLD continues to have monthly social happy hours to promote the YLD and encourage networking with other young attorneys. The YLD’s next Social is tentatively set for June 1.
 
On Cinco de Mayo (May 5), volunteers from the YLD, along with volunteers from the Chattanooga Bar Association and La Paz Chattanooga, will participate in the Latin Festival hosted by Chattanooga State Community College’s Outreach Office, which is a free community celebration with event proceeds going to Chattanooga State Foundation’s Latino Scholarship Fund and the Chattanooga State’s Bridges to Success programs. The Festival will feature traditional folkloric dance and musical performances by local artists and regional performers, a parade of nations, an authentic food court, a pavilion of faith, a Latino-American soccer tournament, a visual artists’ showcase, a Hispanic Heritage Fashion Show, and plenty of family fun. Additionally, from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., volunteer attorneys will present free information sessions on various areas of the law, including immigration law, family law, employment law, landlord/tenant law, and personal injury law. Knoxville Bar Association Barristers – The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast is a recurring event on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:15 a.m., where the Barristers’ and their volunteers serve breakfast to individuals participating in the services of the Volunteer Ministry Center.  The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast Committee always needs volunteers to serve food or sponsor. Everyone is invited to attend the Barristers’ monthly meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of every month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Bistro by the Bijou, 807 South Gay Street.  The next meeting will be held on May 9.

Can you donate a couple of hours of your time to assist area service members and military families? The Knoxville Barristers sponsor a Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic on the second Wednesday of each month from 12 p.m. to 2p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office. The next Veterans Legal Clinic is scheduled for noon on May 9. If you are interested in signing up for the Veterans Clinic, you can do so on the KBA’s website.

Turn Your Expertise into a Magazine Article

Have you considered turning your expertise and experience into an article for the Tennessee Bar Journal? Sharing your knowledge with colleagues is one of the best ways to help the profession while also getting your name out there.
 
How can you become a Journal author? Think of and refine your topic. It should be of interest to Tennessee lawyers, which is a broad criteria. This could mean you might explain a new state law, explain a complicated area of law, or take a larger issue and connect it to what it means for Tennessee attorneys and the justice system. Find a global issue within your particular experience or knowledge and tell about it and how it affects Tennessee law. Then take a look at the writer’s guidelines, which will tell you about length, notes and other details. Once it’s in the proper format, send it in! It goes to the editor, Suzanne Craig Robertson, who will then get it to the seven members of the Editorial Board for review.
 
If you are published, you may apply for CLE credit for your work under Supreme Court Rule 21 Section 4.07(b). For details on claiming the credit, check with the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education.
