This year the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will be recognizing its outstanding members each month by featuring them in the TBA YLD Attorney Spotlight. For the month of April, the YLD is highlighting Gary S. Peeples.

Gary Peeples practices civil litigation with an emphasis on labor and employment law at Burch, Porter & Johnson, PLLC in Memphis.

Peeples, originally from Thomasboro, Illinois (a farm town in downstate Illinois of approximately 1,000 people), earned a B.A. in Linguistics and M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois in 2005 and 2006, respectively. After working (very) briefly as a librarian at an engineering library, he attended Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif, served as an Articles Editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review, and received the top grade in several law school classes. Peeples graduated from law school in 2010, and his first job out of law school was working as a law clerk for Judge Jon P. McCalla, who at that time was the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. After finishing his year with Judge McCalla, Peeples achieved his lifelong dream of being measured solely by billable hours at one of the world’s largest law firms in Chicago.

Peeples missed Memphis and, more generally, Tennessee, so he moved back and served as a law clerk to Judge Ronald Lee Gilman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit during the 2013-2014 term. He joined Burch, Porter & Johnson as an associate in 2014 and has been practicing there ever since. Among other things, Peeples has defended companies large and small in federal and state court.

Peeples has been involved in the Leo Bearman, Sr. American Inn of Court as a Barrister member and has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star. He is currently a member of the Tennessee Bar Association Leadership Law (TBALL) Class of 2018. Peeples has written extensively on labor and employment matters and frequently presents on those issues. He is proud to have introduced (now retired) Judge Richard Posner to Judge Gilman’s writing rules.

On a personal note, Peeples enjoys playing basketball, pretending to be an academic, and helping charter schools.

Please join us in congratulating Gary Peeples as this month’s Tennessee Bar Association YLD’s Attorney Spotlight!

Please send nominations for the May 2018 YLD Attorney Spotlight to YLD Publications Chair Justin Faith.

The ABA YLD Disaster Legal Services Team anticipates potentially three to four thousand appealable issues. There is only one legal aid agency on the island, and it is staffed with two full-time attorneys and one paralegal, which was operating near capacity prior to the disaster. The private bar is also very small, with less than a dozen private attorneys on the island who could take cases. Without your help, most of the people with FEMA issues in American Samoa will not have access to legal assistance.

Please volunteer by signing up here or contacting Linda Anderson at landerson@bals.org

If you're not sold on volunteering yet, here are some other points to consider:
  • We have a coordinator stateside and a local paralegal in American Samoa to help manage the casework.
  • American Samoa is a few hours behind the states, (seven hours behind Eastern) so if you set aside some time in the afternoon/evening, you'll be corresponding during the normal workday in American Samoa.
  • Many of the Appeals are not complicated, and may only require a relatively straightforward response to FEMA.
  • Training/mentorship/templates are available.
  • You don't need to have any prior experience in this area.
Did you know - American Samoa yields the highest rate of military enlistment of ANY U.S. State or Territory per capita. Let's honor that commitment by helping American Samoa in its time of need.

You may contact Terica Smith for more information.

This year the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will be recognizing its outstanding members each month by featuring them in the TBA YLD Attorney Spotlight. For the month of March, the YLD is highlighting Robert L. Sands.

Robert “Rob” L. Sands, a Columbia native, practices civil litigation at Dix & Associates, PLLC, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Sands, the Chair of the Mock Trial Committee for the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers’ Division (TBA YLD), hosted the successful 2018 Tennessee High School Mock Trial Competition earlier this month.

Sands earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 2007. He then went on to attend the University of Memphis School of Law, where he was awarded the Dean’s Award of Excellence for Best Oral Advocate and was a member of the Moot Court Board. After graduating law school in 2010, Sands then served as the Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable J. Mark Rogers, Circuit Court Judge serving Rutherford and Cannon counties.

Since entering private practice, Sands has been involved in the Rutherford and Cannon County Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association and Young Lawyers’ Division, and the Andrew Jackson American Inns of Court, among other activities.  Sands is also a member of the Blue Raider Athletic Association and is a Board Member of the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra. He’s been involved with the TBA YLD’s Mock Trial program since 2012.

On a personal note, Sands is no stranger to the law as his father, Bobby Sands, is a General Sessions Court Judge in Maury County. He enjoys spending his free time with his two children, ages 4 and 1.

Please join us in congratulating Robert L. Sands as this month’s Tennessee Bar Association YLD’s Attorney Spotlight!
