Nashville attorney Robert A. Doll III was indicted in Williamson County for allegedly filing a fake oath for a wife seeking a restraining order against her husband and inducing his client to lie about it on the stand, WSMV reports. Doll was publicly censured by the Board of Professional Responsibility in 2014 after failing to render competent representation and more.

Judge Monte Watkins said jurors will come from Chattanooga to Nashville to hear the second trial of two former Vanderbilt University football players -- Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey -- accused of rape, The Tennessean reports. Defense attorneys requested jurors to be chosen from outside Davidson County, saying selecting local jurors would be difficult because their first trial received a large amount of publicity. The trial date is set for Nov. 30.

Former Davidson County Judge Walter Kurtz filed a class-action suit against Volkswagen, claiming the automaker's intentional installation of a a device in its diesel cars to cheat emissions tests constitutes unjust enrichment, fraud and negligent misrepresentation, the Nashville Post reports. Kurtz purchased one of the company's affected models. "Judge Kurtz filed this lawsuit on behalf of himself and all other individuals like him who purchased one of these vehicles in Tennessee and around the country," said lawyers with Nashville firm Barrett Johnston Martin & Garrison, who are representing Kurtz.

Gov. Bill Haslam said that Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant will operate as normal despite the German automaker’s emissions cheating scandal, Humphrey on the Hill reports. “Obviously we’re concerned about the impact, but their reassurance is this is not going to change their business plan in Chattanooga,” Haslam said. Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke said that he was also assured by Volkswagen that plans at the plant “are still on track." State Senate Speaker Pro Tempore Bo Watson, R-Hixson, has called for legislative hearings on how the emissions cheating scandal could affect the Chattanooga plant.

The Tennessee Supreme Court will hear two civil cases, two Board of Professional Responsibility cases and one death penalty case during oral arguments Oct. 1 at the Supreme Court Building in Nashville. The defendant in the death penalty case – State v. Howard Hawk Willis – has raised 20 issues on appeal for the court to consider regarding his conviction and sentence. The oral arguments are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and are open to the public. Participants in the TBA's Supreme Court Academy will observe some of the session as part of the CLE program.

Lawyer volunteers are needed for the free Incarcerated Civil Law Legal Clinic, Sept. 26, 8 a.m - noon at the Shelby County Jail, 201 Poplar Ave. in Memphis. The clinic will offer free legal advice on veteran issues, divorce, bankruptcy and more for the incarcerated and those who cannot afford legal fees.

University of Tennessee College of Law 2015 graduate William Carey Bateman III wrote about his recent experiences working in Budapest, Hungary, during the refugee crisis in a guest column for The Commercial Appeal. “I didn't know this crisis was afoot when I left the states, but from my earliest moments here I have been made keenly aware of the plight of the refugees and the dilemma facing Hungary and the European Union,” he wrote.
