Tennessee Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery today announced the filing of a lawsuit against Knoxville paralegal Jonathon Trotter, who falsely advertised his ability to provide legal advice, legal services and notary services to Tennessee consumers on Facebook. The suit is seeking a temporary injunction ordering Trotter to immediately stop providing legal advice and services to consumers.

“Indefensible,” is how Gov. Bill Haslam described Donald Trump’s controversial comments about a federal judge presiding over a case involving Trump University. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said the judge, Gonzalo Curiel, has a conflict of interest because of his “Mexican heritage.” Haslam added, “To say that because of someone’s heritage or their ethnicity that they are unable to provide fair judgment is just wrong. It’s just not how the judicial system works in our country and not how it ever can work.” Read more from The Tennessean

Nashville attorneys Stanley Graham and Andrew Naylor, both of Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP, will explain the new federal overtime rule in a one-hour webcast CLE on June 28 at noon CST. The changes include increasing the minimum salary required for exempt employees from $23,660 to over $47,000 per year. The course, approved for one CLE credit, will replay on July 21.

Attorneys for Gatlinburg police Detective Rodney Burns and Ooltewah High School head basketball coach Andre "Tank" Montgomery today entered not guilty pleas for the men charged in connection with the rape of an Ooltewah freshman. Burns faces charges of aggravated perjury for his testimony in the case; Montgomery was charged for failing to report child sexual abuse. Read more from the Knoxville News Sentinel

What’s next for Davidson County's business court? The Nashville Business Journal revisits its headline from a year ago and takes a look at the state of the Tennessee Supreme Court's business litigation pilot project created in May of last year. According to a report from Davidson County Chancery Court, 57 cases have requested transfer to business court as of the end of March.

The Tennessean reports the 14 jurors who will hear the retrial of Brandon Vandenburg, the former Vanderbilt football player accused of rape, were chosen last night in Memphis. The jury, picked from Shelby County residents, contains nine women and five men. The chosen jurors will be bused to Nashville on Sunday and sequestered.

Jury selection is expected to wrap up today in the retrial of former Vanderbilt football player Brandon Vandenburg, The Tennessean reports. More than 160 Shelby County residents were called as potential jurors, and of those dismissed, many felt serving on an out-of-town jury was a hardship.

TBA President Bill Harbison and Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee issued a joint proclamation announcing Seersucker Day for the legal community on June 16. “…The wearing of seersucker has been known to cool tempers and promote great civility among lawyers,” the proclamation reads in part. Seersucker Day will fall next week during the TBA Annual Convention in Nashville, so TBA members are encouraged to celebrate the striped cotton fabric. The Tennessean reports that former University of Tennessee football player O.J. Owens is suing the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA in an effort to recoup unspecified damages for the effects of head trauma he experienced during his college career. His suit is one of 10 filed in the past two months by Chicago-based law firm Edelson on behalf of former college football players. UT is not named as a defendant in the suit.
