State Rep. Bill Beck, D-Nashville, is facing charges of drunken driving and violation of the implied consent law, Knoxnews reports from the Associated Press. Media reports indicate that Nashville police pulled over the first-term legislator on Friday morning and arrested him after he declined to submit to a sobriety test. Beck represents portions of downtown Nashville, East Nashville, Old Hickory and Germantown. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Girls Inc. will honor Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Christie Sell during its 11th annual UnBought & UnBossed Awards Luncheon April from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The awards program honors 10 local women each year who, through their career achievements or community service, have made a positive impact on the lives of Hamilton County girls and women. Legal Aid will host free legal advice clinics each third Tuesday of the month, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting April 21 through July 21. The clinics will be held at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 600 28th Avenue North in Nashville. Angela Jenkins-Hines was reinstated to the practice of law on April 13. She was suspended on January 23 for a period of one year, with 60 days to be served on active suspension and the remainder to be served on probation subject to certain conditions. View the BPR notice.

A vote on a 48-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions and new regulations for abortion providers in Tennessee has been postponed until Monday, the Tennessean reports. The House is expected to approve the two measures, which then go to Gov. Bill Haslam. The state Senate approved the measures yesterday.

House leaders used Wednesday's tax filing deadline to vote on a package of bills designed to protect taxpayers from potential abuse by the IRS, the Times Free Press reports. One bill would prevent IRS employees from using personal email accounts for official business. One would enact a taxpayers' bill of rights, and another would require the tax agency to fire employees caught targeting individuals or groups based on their politics. Two other bills would require federal workers and contractors to be current in their federal taxes.

Georgetown law professor Paul Butler spoke on “Criminal Justice After Ferguson,” Monday at the University of Tennessee, the student newspaper The Daily Beacon reports. Valorie Vojdik, the director of the clinical programs and professor in the College of Law, said inviting Butler to campus was a decision made following the events that unfolded this year in Ferguson, New York City and South Carolina, which she said have “rocked” the criminal justice system.

The Bible will not become the official book of Tennessee this year. Bolstered by opposition from Republican leadership, the Senate voted 22-9 to kill the Bible bill a day after it passed the House, The Tennessean reports.
