As the General Assembly inches toward its expected end in late April, more potentially controversial bills are on committee agendas, the Tennessean reports. The list includes legalization of cannabis oil and medical marijuana, longevity pay and minimum wage, motorcycle helmet restrictions and drinking in cars.

Oregon became the first state Monday to automatically register people to vote. Under the legislation, every adult citizen in Oregon who has interacted with the Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division since 2013 but hasn’t registered to vote will receive a ballot in the mail at least 20 days before the next statewide election. The measure is expected to add about 300,000 new voters to the rolls. WKRN has more from the Associated Press.

Vice President Joe Biden announced a new "Sexual Assault Kit Initiative," aimed at lowering the number of untested rape kits in the U.S. The initiative will invest $41 million in cities across the U.S. that face a backlog of untested kits. An estimated 400,000 rape kits remain untested, the Vice President said. In Memphis, investigators say 6,988 remain untested. Local Memphis has the story.

The February LSAT had the largest increase in test takers since December 2009, the National Law Journal reports. Admissions trackers warn that the recent increase does not necessarily indicate a turnaround for the legal academy. The total number of test takers during the 2014-2015 cycle was still down nearly 4,000 and the level of law school applications is also still down.

The American Bar Association has launched a new website to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. The new website, Icon of Liberty, features nearly 100 sortable images related to Magna Carta, including audio and video components.

The law license of Laura Elizabeth Mills was transferred to inactive status on March 6. She may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and she is fit to resume. John Edward Herbison Jr. was reinstated to the practice of law on Feb. 24. Herbison had been suspended for 18 months with 60 days of the suspension to be served as an active suspension and the remaining 16 months on probation. View the BPR notice.

The Supreme Court of Tennessee disbarred Rutherford County lawyer Edward T. Farmer on March 3. He consented to disbarment, according to the court, because he could not successfully defend himself against allegations of ethical misconduct. Farmer entered a “best interest plea” in the criminal case of State of Tennessee v. Edward Farmer for violations of state law prohibiting sexual exploitation of a minor and tampering with evidence. The court found that his actions violated Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4. View the BPR notice.

The Tennessee Registry of Election Finance board will look into a “dark money” complaint against the committee that campaigned for passage of last year’s state constitutional amendment on judicial selection. The state board voted unanimously Wednesday to issue a “show cause” order to Vote Yes on 2, in response to a complaint filed by John Avery Emison of Alamo charging that Vote Yes failed to fully disclose its contributors. Emison led the opposition campaign against the judicial amendment. The Columbia Daily Herald has the story.
