The Supreme Court issued two dissent-free decisions Monday, a triumph for the ideal of a court that focuses on law rather than politics, Bloomberg News reports. Despite the court’s anticipated divisions over Obamacare and same-sex marriage, columnist Cass Sunstein writes that the justices’ 9-0 decision shows they can agree on “central legal questions” without political influence. The Wikimedia Foundation has filed suit against the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice challenging the NSA's mass surveillance program. The suit alleges that the agency's broad monitoring of Internet traffic violates the freedoms that U.S. citizens are granted under the First and Fourth Amendments. Wikimedia, part of the popular Wikipedia free-content website, is joined by eight other organizations, and will be represented by the American Civil Liberties Union. Pop stars Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams infringed on the copyright for Marvin Gaye's hit song "Got to Give It Up," according to a Tuesday verdict from a federal jury, which awarded Gaye's family $7.4 million. The case marked a monumental win for Nashville entertainment law attorney Richard Busch of King and Ballow, who represented the Gaye family. The contentious and sometimes weird legal battle centered on Thicke and Williams' 2013 song "Blurred Lines.” The Tennessean has the story.

The Lebanon-based law firm of Tressler & Associates rescheduled the grand opening of its new office in Mt. Juliet to this week due to inclement weather. The firm will now hold an open house and reception on Friday from 4-6 p.m. at 1400 North Mt. Juliet Rd., Ste 204.

Attorney and former judge Byron Douglas Bryant died March 8 at the age of 66. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Law and was with a private law practice in Halls Crossroads for 33 years. Bryant also served as Plainview City Judge for many years. The family will receive friends from tomorrow 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. follow by funeral services at 7 p.m. at Washington Presbyterian Church, 7405 Washington Pike in Corryton. Interment will be at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Gov. John Sevier Highway Friday at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Civil War Trust.

Attorneys reporting health care liability claimants are required to provide specified information related to fee arrangements and TennCare payments to the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Per the Tennessee Health Care Liability Reporting Act, the department must submit an annual report summarizing information submitted by health care providers, facilities and attorneys by March 1. The Obama administration today urged the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down bans on same-sex couples’ marriages across the country concluding, “There is no adequate justification for such a discriminatory and injurious exercise of state power.” In addition to the administration’s brief, more than 200 congressional Democrats, led by each chamber’s Democratic leader, filed an amici curiae brief supporting a marriage equality ruling from the court. The Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) is hosting the Nashville Predators' hockey game on March 24. That means that 20 percent of ticket sales from the game will be donated to the TJC if purchased through this link. The Preds will take on the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. that night.

The Tennessee NAACP State Conference will hold its 15th Annual Legislative Day on the Hill in Nashville next Tuesday. The group hopes to engage state lawmakers on issues such as Medicaid expansion, increasing the minimum wage, expanding voting rights and ensuring that Tennessee enacts a new ban on racial profiling. The event is part of a month-long campaign by the Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP called “Journey for Justice.” The Chattanoogan has more.

After losing a court fight to keep its records private, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) is asking the state legislature to exempt it from public scrutiny, the Nashville Scene reports. TSSAA is a nonprofit organization authorized by the state Board of Education to regulate state high school athletics. Sponsored by Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, SB1225 would exempt records held by TSSAA from the public records law based on the argument that it is a voluntary association.
