A Nashville couple had no doubt that they were working with a real attorney when they hired Greg Pillow to handle a medical malpractice suit, but suspicion arose when he called saying the case was settled. A look into Pillow’s past found a lengthy criminal history including a 2008 conviction of pretending to be an EMT and accusations of posing as a fire fighter. The State Board of Professional Responsibility has no record of Pillow having a law license and the office address he gave clients is invalid. Although he did not take any money for services, the couple says his scam caused “plenty of frustration.” Pillow did not respond to Fox 17’s phone calls for comment.

The Board of Professional Responsibility has dismissed an ethics complaint against 10th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Bebb, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports. State lawmakers filed the complaint last year after a House special oversight committee reviewed evidence compiled from a TBI report and witness interviews. Allegations against Bebb’s office included financial misconduct and civil rights violations in the handling of arrests and prosecutions.

Knoxville attorney Terry Adams stopped in Nashville today during his two-day, six-city “Backbone of Tennessee” tour, part of his campaign to challenge Lamar Alexander for the U.S. Senate. The Democrat launched his tour yesterday with stops in Tri-Cities, Knoxville and Chattanooga, and planned to visit Jackson and Memphis today, as well. The Tennessean has the story.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will headline the Tennessee Republican Party Statesmen’s Dinner in May, the Nashville Business Journal reports. Christie, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016, will give the keynote address at the annual event, the largest yearly gathering of Tennessee Republicans and a major fundraising event for the party.

The Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts is accepting applications for two grants funding the Parent Education and Mediation Fund and the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program. The deadline for both grants is April 11.

Wilson County Family Court Judge John T. Gwin has announced he is running for re-election to the position he has held since the Court was first formed as Division III of the General Sessions Court in 2008. Before going on the bench, Gwin was in private law practice for more than 30 years, with primary emphasis on family law matters. The Chronicle of Mt. Juliet has more.

There will be a lot of choices to make in elections this year, in both primaries and main elections. For those in the 10th Judicial District -- Bradley, McMinn, Monroe and Polk counties -- who may be a little confused about what each position entails, the Advocate and Democrat breaks down the functions of the judges in circuit court parts 1, 2 and 3, general sessions court and criminal court. The paper also lists the candidates running for each position, including public defender and district attorney.

After a two-year legal battle with Brentwood over the use of the city-controlled library as an early voting site, the Williamson County Election Commission announced that it will only have one spot for early voting in the upcoming county primary electin -- Election Commission offices in the county’s administrative complex in Franklin. Early voting will be open from April 16 through May 1. The Tennessean has more.

Four Democrats will face off in the May Democratic primary for Criminal Court Clerk in Shelby County — assistant district attorney general Michael McCusker, Memphis City Council member Wanda Halbert, City Court Clerk Thomas Long and the Rev. Ralph White, pastor of Bloomfield Baptist Church. The only Republican running is Richard DeSaussure, the chief administrator of the office under incumbent Kevin Key, who is not seeking re-election. Three weeks remain to file qualifying petitions for the August nonpartisan and judicial races as well as the primaries for state and federal offices. The Memphis Daily News has more on the candidates in the races for state Senate District 31, state House District 91, state House District 96, Circuit Court Division 2 and Probate Court Division 1.

Many Hamilton County judges and attorneys paid their respects to the members of the legal community who passed away in 2013 at the Chattanooga Bar Association’s annual memorial service on March 7. Presiding Judge W. Neil Thomas III and CBA President Timothy Mickel were among those providing remarks.The Hamilton County Herald has more.
